    Default Questions on mounting Sierra-2s

I'm considering Sierra-2s for my home theater setup (3 front, 2 rear), but have some questions about mounting them before purchasing. My room is unusual - a loft space with balconies at both the front and back of the space, and I need speakers can be mounted on their face, and angled downward.

    1. From the pictures in the Sierra-2 gallery, I see a small hole toward the bottom center of these speakers. I assume that is for a wall mount - can someone please confirm?

    2. If the small hole is for a mounting bracket, can someone point me at a bracket that will actually work with these. They're 20 lbs, and OmniMount wall brackets only support 10 lbs.

    3. I would prefer to mount the speakers horizontally, and I see that there's a Sierra-2 center option. I assume that the only difference is that the tweeter is mounted at 90 degrees, so that it's still vertical instead of horizontal. Is this correct?

    4. If the center version is as described above, what's the best option for wall mounting it? (The small mounting hole will now be off center, and unlikely to work well without the speaker twisting.)

    5. Once mounted, these speakers will be approx 13' from the listening position and angled downward from a height of about 9.5 ft. I know that's not ideal, but it's the best I can do given what I have to work with. My assumption is that a ribbon driver will have a more directed radiating pattern than a conventional tweeter, and that it will actually work better in my situation, but can anyone confirm? (My room also has a lot of hard surfaces, and reflection is a general problem. If I can more carefully control the direct response, I think things will sound better.)

Thanks for any answers you can provide!

    1. The small hole is for securing the speaker to a stand, not for supporting the weight of the speaker.
    2. How about placing the speakers on small shelves?
    3. Yes, the center is the same other than the tweeter being rotated.
    4. I would recommend mounting the speaker vertically if at all possible. It'll have a more even off-axis response.
    5. I think the ribbon will work well in your room.

    Hi natetg57,

Thanks for your response. Disappointing to hear that the hole isn't geared toward a mounting bracket. I'm not sure shelves will work in my case since the speaker needs to be angled downward (maybe 30 degrees). I found these beefier OmniMounts: http://www.omnimount.com/products/sp...series/20.0_w/, but it sounds like they won't work.

Are there any other mounting brackets that you might recommend? I found these PinPoint mounts: http://www.amazon.com/Pinpoint-Mount...pinpoint+am-40 but I'm not sure if I would need to screw into the speaker cabinet to secure them, and I'm concerned about breaking the acoustic seal. Also, in this thread http://forum.ascendacoustics.com/sho...nting+brackets it sounds like they won't angle down enough.

Maybe the CBM-170 SEs are a better choice for me, since they're designed for wall mounting. How do the 2 compare?

The Sierra-2 is quite heavy and due to the depth of the speaker, wall mounting via rear mounted threaded inserts is just an all-around bad idea as doing so creates a very large amount of torque on the inserts and is simply an accident waiting to happen.

For Sierra-1 and Sierra-2, I recommend using these side-clamping wall mounts which better distribute the torque. http://www.pinpointmounts.com/AM-41_...l#.VD3D47l0yUk

Just joined the community, thinking about purchasing the Sierra 2's (bookshelf and center). I only need to mount the center. I understand the center is the same cabinet as the standard bookshelf - meaning 14.25" (W) x 7.5" (H) x 10.5" (D).

The pointed out http://www.pinpointmounts.com/AM-41_...l#.VGey9ofFvxV state that they only support a speaker up to 12" wide. Since the Sierra is 14.25" wide, will that mount still work?

Also, I noticed that mount pushed the speaker away from the wall about 2.5". What is the minimum distance one could set the speaker from the wall?

    Thanks in advance!

Have you considered simply building a shelf for the center channel?

Hehe. You know. Sometime you need someone to point out the obvious. I hadn't considered that for some reason. That would be my preference I'm just not sure it would work. This speaker would go below a flat panel television that sits above a fire place.

Thanks for the tip though. I'm going to see if there is any way I could do that.

I put my Sierra-2 below my TV and above my fireplace. It isn't pointed down, but simple shims might accomplish that. Information on the mounting bracket I used is in this post: http://forum.ascendacoustics.com/sho...7547#post37547
