Hey Curtis,
nice to to hear from you.
Good point about the ports. I had thought of that earlier, but had forgotten. Besides that, then, there would be little audible difference between the two choices, especially with a subwoofer. I’ll have to wait for the finished product, and make my decision then.

With a depth of only 5.75" and being front ported, these are ideal for customers looking for an ultra high performance on-wall speaker, or for use in/on a TV console or entertainment center.

Depends, for flush mounting we will be offering the hardware. For attaching to a bracket, really any bracket that can work with a 1/4-20 threaded insert.

Knowing that the Sierra Diamond is $7500/pr, what would you pay for these?
-
Re: New for 2016 - Introducing the Luna Mini Monitor!
They would no doubt be priced @ beaucoup and a nerd but making a couple of assumptions I doubt they'd much more than a Sierra Diamond:
1> A Sierra custom Excel woofer is probably a tad more expensive than a W123CY003
2> A Luna LCR is probably going to cost about the same as a Sierra II + a scoach
So if I'm willing to spring for a Sierra Diamond but I have a personal preference for a miniaturized flush mounted speaker why not consider a Luna Diamond?
Honestly it's too soon for me to jump on the Luna LCR Diamond and assuming Dave is willing to accommodate the following custom's, a huge assumption, all of them are on my list of possibilities.
Luna LCR RAAL
Luna LCR RAAL + W123CY003's
Luna LCR Diamond + W123CY003's
Sierra II RAAL
Sierra II RAAL + Custom SEAS Excel Woofer
Sierra Diamond + Custom SEAS Excel Woofer
I'm planning to purchase speakers at the end of Q1 CY19 and I'd see it as a rare and welcome privilege to own any of the these speakers but until Q1 I'm staying open minded.

Don't mean to be a pest, but it's been over a month and I'm jonesing for an update on the Luna Center. Any closer to being able to purchase one of those bad boys?

Re: New for 2016 - Introducing the Luna Mini Monitor!
There IS a Luna Center option in the main products pages now, but it must be just a single, standard Luna (MAYBE with rotated tweeter? - it does not say).

Single Luna with rotated tweeter for horizontal placement. The dual woofer Luna will be called the Luna LCR, not Luna "center".

Regarding the forthcoming Luna LCR:
Unfortunately, due to ongoing bamboo shortages - cabinet production likely won't start until January. From there it will be an estimated 2-3 months before we will be able ship these to customers.

Re: New for 2016 - Introducing the Sierra Satellite, or “Sierra Sat” for short!
Happy New Year and best wishes to all on a healthy 2019.
Apologies for this Luna newbie question.
I have read a number of times in this thread that people have auditioned the Luna full range.
I also read that they pair well with a sub crossed over at 80hz. What is not clear to me is specifically in a sub-paired scenario whether the crossover reference for a high-pass (e.g. only sending >80hz to the Luna's) or low pass (e.g. setting the sub's low pass crossover at <80hz)?
Please share your personal experience running the Luna's full range as front R/L and setting (tweaking) the sub's crossing over at 80hz.

Happy New Year to you too!
I am not quite sure I follow you. For nearly all surround receivers and processors, when you enable bass management (set speakers to small) - for whatever crossover frequency you set (typically 80Hz) - the speakers will be high passed at 80Hz and the sub will be low passed at 80Hz. You do not want a "hole" in the response - so if the speakers are high passed at 80, the sub should be low passed at 80.
The ideal crossover point for the Luna's is 80Hz when used with a sub.
-
Re: New for 2016 - Introducing the Sierra Satellite, or “Sierra Sat” for short!
Thanks Dave for the quick response.
I'm doing something perhaps less conventional in my set up, when two subs are connected.
The first sub is connected to the sub/LFE pre-out of the receiver. Listening to any audio in surround mode works fine.
The dilemma with the first setup is when I switch to 2-channel audio, with menu settings of front = small speakers/crossover = 80Hz. The LFE connected sub receives nominal/no signal.
Therefore the other sub, is fed through the front L/R pre-outs and I have set the front speakers to large.
My primary question is, what is the result to listening experience and downside for the Luna speakers when fed a full-range signal (not high passed at 80hz)? Are the Luna drivers at risk of over excursion and associated distortion?
Aside from replacing the receiver/processor with something newer, providing more configuration options and better bass management settings, are there other alternative configurations you'd suggest?
Audio gear includes: Sony receiver STR-DA3300ES, Emotiva amp XPA5-Gen3

Re: New for 2016 - Introducing the Sierra Satellite, or “Sierra Sat” for short!
Dave,
I may be way out in left field here, but have you ever considered releasing the Luna with an NRT tweeter instead of the ribbon?
I have a setup in our loft with a 55" TV and a 3.2 setup. Currently a couple of Polk R10s, a JBL G Center, and a pair of Outlaw M8 subs. We only ever use it for watching TV/movies or listening to the radio when we're in other parts of the house.
I would like to replace the speakers with something a little better, but the Lunas, while perfect size wise when the Luna LCR comes out, would be a little overkill, and certainly would require the true cost hidden with some discretion :)
Obviously I'm not an audio engineer like yourself, but it seems like a logical gap filler for someone that wants the awesome look of bamboo cabinets but for whom the $2K pricetag for a Luna setup is a little out of range...
-
Re: New for 2016 - Introducing the Sierra Satellite, or “Sierra Sat” for short!
I thought the same thing. Some NRT Luna's as surrounds just to bring down the cost. I won't be able to appreciate the ribbons on the two rear speakers.

We can offer the Luna with the NrT dome or standard Sierra-1 dome. However, please note that the landed cost of our SEAS NrT dome tweeter is basically the same as our landed cost of the Luna ribbon tweeter. There would be no cost savings using our NrT dome.

Best option would be using our stock Sierra-1 dome. Even with this option, cost savings wouldn't be that much, all of the components used in the Luna are very expensive, including the woofer and the cabinet itself.

Re: New for 2016 - Introducing the Sierra Satellite, or “Sierra Sat” for short!
Ah ok, I just knew the RAAL ribbons were an added cost upgrade to the towers so I was thinking a dome tweeter Luna would bring the price down. No big deal. Thanks Dave!

Dave,
What kind of estimated cost reduction would happen with the stock Sierra-1 dome? It could makes sense if someone is outfitting a home theater system.

Thanks for your honest answer Dave, it is always appreciated. I think as Ascend customers we've gotten used to the "customize it as you want" when maybe that isn't what should be done. I am curious as well on the savings with the Sierra 1 dome, but as you said, it probably isn't likely to be a huge change.
For me personally, for $80 I could "fix" the current issue in my setup, which is an inadequate center when matched to the cheapest bookshelfs that Polk Audio makes.
It's just a question whether I want to spend the money to make my "house" setup as opposed to my theater setup a world class music listening station or not. At least I have some time to contemplate that issue as the Luna LCR appears a little ways out yet....
-
Re: New for 2016 - Introducing the Sierra Satellite, or “Sierra Sat” for short!
Just ordered a Luna center, but after reading this I'm pretty excited about checking out the Luna LCR when it's done and available. It's appealing because the dimensions allow it to fit in most AV cabinet shelves, like the one I have which is around 17.25"x6.25". Larger centers require their own stand/shelf or for the TV to be wall mounted up and above. The Lunas add so much more flexibility as centers.
Definitely may be trading up in the future.

Re: New for 2016 - Introducing the Sierra Satellite, or “Sierra Sat” for short!
Dave would have to redesign an entirely new crossover for a different Luna tweeter. Not an insignificant cost unless he decides to sell the version at higher volumes.

After checking, we can do this now with the standard Sierra-1 tweeter. I was concerned about the necessary crossover mods as there is absolutely zero free space in the Luna cabinet but I am confident we can make it work.
If we swap the ribbon tweeter for the Sierra-1 tweeter, we can offer a pair of Luna's for $988/pair. That isn't too much of a price difference as the woofer and cabinet are very expensive, but it does bring the cost down to under $1K for a pair...

I am not familiar enough with your Sony receiver but something doesn't sound right that the receiver will no longer output LFF if set to 2-channel mode. Typically, there is a setting for the sub were you can set the output to LFE + Main, where the sub is fed both the LFE and all bass below wherever you have the high pass filter set to. You should check this.
You can also simply run both subs off the L/R pre-outs.
That said, the Luna woofer's can absolutely handle full range signals :)

Re: New for 2016 - Introducing the Sierra Satellite, or “Sierra Sat” for short!
Thank you, Dave.
I have had the 3 Lunas setup (R/C/L) for approaching 2 weeks and am very pleased with them and their size is perfect for my listening room. Their performance has been remarkable with full range audio input (and complimented with a sub).
Their imaging is incredible. Numerous times while listening in stereo-only, I have to physically go to the center speaker to confirm that no audio is being reproduced (e.g. lead vocal). These speakers' capabilities, combined with your active engagement on forums and open collaboration in product development, have earned you a very satisfied customer.
Regarding my previously mentioned bass management challenge, I hope to be able to remedy that in the near future with a new processor.
One additional follow up: In my listening room, the Lunas are positioned on a mantel 61" off the ground and above the ear-height when seated. No tilt on the speakers at this time, they are sitting level. I have been trying out both orientations ("standard" = tweeter on top; "upside down" = tweeter on bottom). With tweeter on bottom it also aligns it in nearly the same horizontal plane as the center tweeter. Do you have a recommendation regarding the R/L Lunas tweeter/woofer positioning?

Dave,
Thank you for the estimate. I am bit away from my home theater, but I do a lot of planning in advance and was looking forward to an upgrade from my CBM-170 SE with a similar bass tuning to it or the Sierra-2/Sierra Luna, but somewhere in-between, price-wise.

Since upside-down gets the tweeters closer to ear level, than that's what I would go with. Make sure that the speakers are even with the front edge of the mantel to avoid reflections off of the top surface

Re: New for 2016 - Introducing the Sierra Satellite, or “Sierra Sat” for short!
Hi Dave,
In a 2.1 vertical orientation, would the Luna LCR (crossed over 70 to 80hz) be more efficient, create a bigger soundstage (wider dispersion), reproduce a more open realistic midrange or tighter bass definition (vs the regular Luna)?!?

The 340s might have more raw output too, because they are likely more efficient and can draw more power without damaging the drivers. I think Dave might have been mentioning any characteristics that would be related to the quality of the sound. I could be wrong. In fact, I would love to be wrong, since I plan to buy some Sierra Luna LCRs.

It’s been a while but I’m back in the game and have a pair of Luna’s in satin black bamboo on order! These will be replacing my HTM 200s in my bedroom setup. The 200s will be kept for a future dedicated theater room build. I also grabbed a Yamaha rx-a1070 to power them. Thanks to Dave and Dina for the assistance!

Efficiency of the new speaker will come in at 86-87dB, so yes, quite a bit more efficient than the Luna. Bass is different, I am tuning the bass more similar to our Horizon, so extension will be about the same as the Luna, but with quite a bit more midbass slam. Mids and Highs will be basically the same, but the new speaker will play quite a bit louder and with less compression / distortion at louder volume levels due to spreading the load over (2) woofers as opposed to a single woofer.
