Default Stands vs. on top of cabinet?

Presently I have my LXs on stands, but are considering building a wall to wall TV/media cabinet and placing the speakers on top of it. The plan is to make the console/cabinet out of solid wood and place the speakers on it. The console will be the same height and it will be wide enough to place the speakers 20"-22" off the wall, which is the same as the stands are now.

My question is - With the speakers at the same height and distance from the walls with either method, will there be any difference in sound quality having the speakers on regular stands compared to on top of the console?

    Have fun - Hans

PS. Dave, the speakers made the trip to Sweden just fine. Your packing is excellent. As is your speakers.

The only thing I can think of with the speakers on top of the console is how far forward you will have the front of the speaker. If say in the middle of the top, you might get reflections from the console top. So, you may need to place the speakers so that the front of the speaker is at the front edge of the console. This is what I did with my Horizon center, which is placed directly on top of my entertainment center.

What difference did you notice having the speaker up front vs. further back?

I’ve never had it further back. Not much room behind the speaker plus no need to introduce possible reflections from a solid surface so close
