Has anyone tried refinishing Sierra cabinets?

Has anyone tried refinishing Sierra cabinets? I'm mostly wondering if the bamboo sands similarly to wood, or if there are any other tips or tricks I should be aware of. I picked up some Sierra 1s secondhand that have some cosmetic damage that I would like to repair.

Bamboo sands like wood, however - there are many layers of clear coat on the cabinets. In addition, Bamboo Ply does not take stain or paint like wood does.
