The little speakers struggle to keep up at high volumes, the 340 doesn't.l, it has 2 6.5" drivers.
I'm a Guy that has done both.
340SEC takes a beating, nothing else I've had does that(except a different brand...way crazy).my amps suck, except for the 340sec speaker.
It just works, and sounds mint.
You can buy the most expensive speakers on the planet...I think you should buy the 340SEL, Dave made Phenomenal speakers, & I think overall these were his best.
You provide a strong argument for buying the 340’s. I am still looking at them strongly. In fact I was thinking of buying them for my LCR and mounting all 3 vertically with the LR on stands and the center on a silicone angled support that will keep the center in a 15 deg angle up towards the main sitting area. Also thinking of the 200se’s for surrounds. All of these speakers are very sensitive so the Anthem mrx540 at 100 watts per channel should be sufficient. So many choices for a HT. I’ve also been looking at Paradigm premiere and Kef Q series speakers as well but I always return to the Ascend speakers. Also considering Sierra 1 x3 for LCR

I have the 340SE as my L&R mains, driven by a Emotiva Fusion 8100 AVR, which can do 2x110W, 5x80W or 7x65W.
    I have a 5.1 setup with a Rythmik L12 sub, crossed over at 80Hz, in a 18x14 room.
With the 340SEs high sensitivity and the L12 relieving them from anything below 80Hz, I can play at deafening levels, music in stereo or movies in 5.1 🙂.
Can't go wrong with the 340SE (even more so the 340SE2) for HT use with an AVR.

You have provided another positive vote for me to choose the 340’s and coincidentally I plan to purchase 2 Rythmik L12’s. I will have to ask Dave or Dina about my plan to place the center 340 vertically on the floor in front of the tv and tv stand. The stand is 21” tall and the tv is 3” above that. I plan to use a couple of acoustic mounts to keep the speaker off the floor

Dave can comment more competently than I, however the 340SE or SE2 as a vertical center should actually have a wider horizontal dispersion vs a horizontal placement.

The 340SE are mint, BUT they get a bit bright when pushed hard{I push shit- AND I don't have 340w Brystons) fortunately/Unfortunately THEY'VE got the same tweeters as the 140's( Dave can confirm, pretty sure)
I actually love my 340SEC(CENTER)but when I push it multichannel hard,I can hear the bright...80% of the time it does vocals on shows/movies, PERFECT.

I'M POUNDING IT RIGHT NOW with music in 5Ch, I can hear that Tweeter..not horrendous, but it's there.
If you don't pound volume, it'll be the pretty much the most perfect thing you have ever had.

Just giving my opinion, others may vary.

Ascend makes unbelievable stuff, you just need to figure out what you NEED, and WANT(usually 2 different things hahaha).
THEY'LL work with you on everything, Deana and Dave won't be beat in customer service.

    Have Fun!
    Go Ascend!

Muzz, speakers are linear devices. The tonal balance of a speaker does not change with volume until you reach thermal or mechanical limitations. What does change with volume? Your hearing, and by large amounts. (research Fletcher-Munson).

In addition, as you get higher in volume levels, individual ear sensitivities also come more into focus and can become real issues.
