    Default Refinishing Sierra Cabinets?

Has anyone tried refinishing Sierra cabinets? I'm mostly wondering if the bamboo sands similarly to wood, or if there are any other tips or tricks I should be aware of. I picked up some Sierra 1s secondhand that have some cosmetic damage that I would like to repair.

Can you describe the type of damage? Is it surface damage to the finish or is it actual damage such as nicks or gouges?

If it's simply surface or finishing damage I remember reading discussions related to using certain auto polishing compounds with random orbital polishers.

If the damage is deeper and you want to get the cabinet back to bare bamboo, you're looking at the use of random orbital sanders with progressive grits.

This is just some initial thoughts without knowing what type of refinishing they require.

Dave is certainly the most knowledgeable person on this subject.

The standard cabinets have a very thick and tough layer of a PY resin clear coat. Removing this to get to the bamboo is extremely difficult. Even if you manage to remove the clear coat, bamboo is much more difficult to work with than typical wood. It can be sanded, but it does not take stain like wood.
