    Default Receiver setup with Ascends

    Morning all....

Finally got my HT setup, with 340SE LCR and a pair of 200s in the rear, with an SVS PB-12 NSD sub. The room is smallish, basically 20' by 15'. We sit with our backs to the wall and watch the TV on the other wall the shorter way, so about 11 feet to the TV.

I have a Pio Elite VSX-84TSXi receiver with the MCACC auto-setup for speakers and it seems to be doing a good job but it has the speakers set to "Large". Should I be setting them to small? Obviously the sub is more than capable of handling whatever I throw at it, but I'm new to this so I want to be sure. Also should I be setting the crossover at 80hz?

    Thanks!

I personally would try setting them to Small(the sub and the 340se will be producing alot of the SAME frequencies otherwise, they will also sound different at those freq's, plus I thought I read about timing[ <may be WAY wrong there].. dave would be able to tell you better), and set the XOver to 60, and see if you like that. If not, then 80 is probably the most common setting, and the speakers would still be set at small.

Thats the common way to do it, there ARE folks that run things at large as well

OK thanks...personally I think the speakers sound a little "boomy" so this might address that.

I'd try both at small, and see which XOver(60 or 80) sounds better to you.

The 200's are only rated at 80. If you can set your crossovers seperately I wouldn't go below 80 for the 200's maybe even 100. All speakers should be set to small. Play around and let your ears decide.
    Have fun!

Yep. The reason I stated 60 or 80 is because his mains are killer(wasn't sure about seperate settings on tha AVR), and surrounds are usually just Ambience in movies, and usually very short duration. For full 5 channel audio it would definitely be a bit of a different story.

    Just my thoughts.

I do the same (have 340SE LCR + 200 sides w/ a Pio 74txvi). You can set different MCACC slots with different settings and easily toggle to compare. Just remember, after setting the speakers to "small" just make sure to re-run MCACC with the "Keep all speaker settings" mode (I'm assuming the menu is similar to the 74's). Otherwise, it'll revert back to "large". What you don't wanna do is run MCACC first, then manually change everything to "small."
