No sub? Then the answer is simple - set the receiver to speakers at 'large' and the sub to 'off/none'. With no sub you don't have to worry about crossover points.

You should really get a sub. It's needed for both music and movies, especially with the 170.

I have a HSU STF-2 that sounds great with the CMT 340 L/R.
It's only $400, and completely worth it.

If you are not going to run a sub...you should consider getting the 340 L/R instead of the 170's. The 340's give you a fuller sound with deeper base extension.

I live in an apartment too, and was at first concerned about getting a sub, especially a downfiring one like the HSU VTF-2, since I live upstairs. However, I would say it is a must have if you are using your Ascends for HT as well as music. Kept at an a moderate level, the sub doesn't bother anyone (at least, my downstairs neighbors have not yet come running up the stairs with torches in hand )

I had a SVS 25-31pc+ and loved it but my apartment's walls and floors are so thin that you can hear everything. When my lease I am going to buy the SVS again as that is one sweet sub.

You are in LA....you owe it to yourself to visit Hsu Research. If you do get that 25-31PC+, I would like to check it out. I have had a 20-39PC+ next to my VTF-3 in my house to compare.

OK, now im pissed. I hooked up some old advent bookshelf speakers to my refurb H/K avr-125. The sound coming from the left speaker is very distorted and cuts in and out. I first thought it was the speaker that was blown but I switched them around and its still the same.

Do I have a defective receiver? I checked the wires(red, black) and the connection. Sound only comes out in dolby digital. I don't want to return it if it's fine and I am doing something wrong. Any suggestions?

    Curtis,

You have forgot to give us your thoughts on how they compare.
