My system is complete for the most part. I am happy with my speakers and should be set for many years to come. I'm trying to figure out what I should upgrade next. I have narrowed down two options. What is the best route to go?

1 - Add a second VTF-3 MK4 (open floor plan 5600 cubic ft room)
2 - Add a Emoitiva XPA-3 three channel amp (200 wpc)

I'm in a similar boat and torn between an SACD/DVD-A player or a second 12" Rythmik.

I am leaning more towards the xpa-3. Would really like to get some quality power to drive my Sierra-1s. They are really supposed to shine with a nice amp. :)

My next purchse will likely be some HTM200 SE to replace my current surrounds. On a larger scale I kind of have this urge...well desire to upgrade my current avr to a newer xt32 processing unit or contact Nathan at Funk Audio regarding a new sub built. I love the idea of a custom built unit in bamboo using some of his new drivers to match my espresso Towers....now that would be sweet......

Just one problem as I see it....the wifey....but she'll cave eventually...:D

Hi king,

Both are good options.

Your VTF-3 MK4 is a very good subwoofer. Adding a second one will likely smooth out bass response and cancel some of the room resonance. In addition, you typically get a bit more output and extension with two subwoofers. If maximum bass performance is critical for you (especially for HT), I'd lean this direction.

The external amp idea is also a great choice. I upgraded from an AVR to a real amplifier earlier this year. While my AVR wasn't as powerful or as new as your Onkyo, I noticed a huge difference in the sound quality and performance of my Sierra-1s. I now run two (real) amplifiers for my 7.1 setup and things have never sounded better. Since your AVR has pre-outs, this would be an easy addition and would free up the AVR power supply to drive the surrounds only. If memory serves, there are several members around here using an XPA-3 with their Ascend front stage with great results.

Full disclosure: I own several Emotiva products including 3 of their amplifiers. I am very happy with the value and performance. They have a 30-day trial/return policy so there is minimal risk if you're not satisfied.

Depending on your purchase time frame, I wanted to inform you of a 2-week sale going on. If you decide on that amp, you can get 10% off by entering a promo code at checkout. Details here (http://emotiva.com/news/index.php/2012/09/17/were-sharing-the-love-save-10-with-code-love2012-two-weeks-only/). The sale started on Sept 17, so there are a few days left. :)

Not to thread-jack, but since we're all discussing next upgrades, I'll be purchasing another pair of HTM-200s next month for back surrounds. Then I'll have a 100% Ascend 7 channel setup! After that, I'll be waiting patiently for Dave's Sierra-1 uber-upgrade.

Upgrade-itis: it's an incurable disease. :D
