rock on!

the 170s are stellar. they stand right up there with the big boys. kinda like mario jumping on bowser's head. ;) ah, flashbacks of NES.

Since upgrading my 170s to 340s for fronts, I want to put the 170s as my surrounds. Problem is, I need something to mount these things to the walls (drywall on studs). Anyone know of brackets that would support these?

Sony WE610 60" LCD RPTV
Pioneer Elite 59TXi AVR
Pioneer Elite 59AVi Universal DVD player
CBM 340 Front L/R
CBM 340c Center
HTM 200s Rear L/R and rear surround (6.1)
HSU VTF-3
Monster THX certified interconnects
DIY speaker cable (that's better than anyhing I can purchase elsewhere)

Omnimounts should work.

Curtis....will the omnimounts hold 20 lbs worth of speakers with just anchor bolts used on straight drywall?

I know others have done it.

Maybe check the Omnimount site.

Omnimount 20.0's will work fine. They hold up to 20 pounds. If you need extra support on your drywall, put a board between the mount and the drywall, screws in the corners of the boards and mount the omnimount in the middle of the board. It should spread the weight out enough to hold the speaker with no problem... at least this was my experience.

Screwing into a stud is not an option?

A stud would be great, but it is not always in the best position for the speaker.

Hmmmm. Actually, I think that's backwards.

graphicguy,

All four of my surrounds are 170's mounted with omnimounts in drywall. I used some pretty heavy duty toggle bolts to make sure the drywall would hold up. I haven't had any problems. The speaker mounts and the drywall are holding up great.

True enough "not always the best position" but WORST case is 8"s off with standard 16" stud spacing. And with Ascends excellent dispersion pattern... Just an thought, I don't know the particulars of the install.

I don't know about drywalls and stud spacing either. I guess if the worse it could be off is 8"...then it is definitely something to think about.

Hi,

I am a new to this forum. I bought Ascend speakers after reading this forum for a while. I got 340c, 2 170 as main and 2 170 as surround. I am trying to set them up.

I plan to place the 340c on top of my 27" TV, but the top is not flat, any one please tell me the way to do it?

For all 4 170 speakers I'd like to use stand instead of hanging them on the wall. Please give me some suggestions on what brand of stand is good.

And also suggestions on cables. I remember someone said 12gauge cable at Homedepot is good enough. It that true?

Thanks a lot.

Welcome to the forum.

Home Depot 12 gauge is fine.

Any good stand will work fine...right around 30" I believe is the recommended height. You can try www.racksandstands.com.

How angled is the top of the TV? Will the speaker sit on it without sliding? The center channel slightly angled toward the listening position is sometimes helpful. You could also try Auralex MoPads, and something like this might help http://www.racksandstands.com/prods/Sanus/TVSb-and-TVSc/0PSY0054.htm

good luck!

Thanks a lot.

The angle won't be greater than 10degree I believe. If the top position doesn't fit well I will try to put the 340c in one of the lower shelf of the stand.

I did some search on speaker stands for 170surround, but it looks like there is no stand that holds 20lb at a height about 2 -3 feet above the listening position, which is suggested by ascend mannual. From threads here bracket seems to be a better solution.

graphicguy, did you use omnimount 20s to hangup you 170s? There are only 2 screws on the back of 170, but 4 screws are used by omnimount to attach speakers, and also the screw size is different. How did you attach the 170 to omnimount? Do we need to make 2 holes and screw into 170?

Thanks.

These are also available with the post horizontal. Is there a reason these won't work in your situation?

The omnimount only uses two screws into the speaker and two into the wall. I have my 170s on omnimounts. See the photo on Ascend's site: http://www.ascendacoustics.com/pages/products/access/brackets/omni_series20.html

My listening position is about 38inch high, but the max height of omnistand is only 40 inches. The speaker won't be <font color="blue">2 to 3 feet above listening position </font id="blue">as suggested by the mannual. The highest stand I found out on the internet is 45 inches.

To use brackets the mininum height is about 4 feet above listening position due to the room structure, and 2 feet behind listening position, <font color="blue">not directly to left and right to </font id="blue">listening position as suggested in the mannul. That's why I was thinking to use stand earlier.

Any advice on which factor is more important (blue bolded), please?

Not many of us have the perfect room for mounting the surrounds.

My surrounds are mounted about 4 feet above the listening and sound great.

I posted in another thread about home made stands I use for surrounds. The speakers are not as big as the 170's, but the basic design could be modified to suit the 170's. Basically, the stands have a rectangular base...1" thick oak roughly 12" square...ROUGHLY. There are two uprights, approx. 3/4"x 2" oak x 60" tall, spaced far enough apart to allow the speaker terminal cup to fit between them. Connecting the tops of the uprights is a crossmember of the same size oak, cut to fit between the uprights. This top piece is set back 1/4" from the front edge of the uprights, providing the clearance needed for the hanger screw head(a suitable sized woodscrew)I screwed into the center of the leading edge of the top crossmember. This screw allows a speaker with a keyhole bracket on it's back to hang from the front of the supports. There are two additional cross members...a second one just below the speaker terminal cup but hidden by the speaker, and a third one about mid-way up the uprights for additional support. A very simple, yet effective design. The height can be tailored to suit your needs. In my case, a friend who builds kitchen cabinets was kind enough to build them for me. I just applied some tongue oil and was done!
