I think your idea is a good one. The 340's should be around next year...if not, I would think something would take their place. Give the Ascend guys a call and discuss.
And yes...the 170's will fill that space. But with that room, you could definitely do 340's across the front, and a pair of 170 for surrounds...when you are ready for 7.1 you will just need another pair of 170's.
