View Full Version : Am I crazy for wanting an all Sierra 7.1 system?

Currently I have 7.1 setup with Sierra-1's for LW, L, C, R, RW and HT200 for SL & SR. The sub is a SVSound PB13-Ultra. They're tied together with a Denon 4311CI using Audyssey DSX.

The speakers were all purchased about 4 years ago and we've thoroughly enjoyed them. But, after hanging out here at ascend and svsound for the last few days I'm starting to get the speaker itch again. Not for completely new stuff but for the upgrades that have been developed.

I'm thinking about buying a couple Sierra-1 towers, pushing the L & R speakers to the SL & SR position and upgrading all the existing to the NrT setup. This would provide a completely matched 7.1 Sierra setup.

It would be awesome but I wonder if I'm crazy? Heck, I might move the HT200's to the LH & RH position and go for 9.1.

...OK, after typing this post out I realize this is a stupid question. Why WOULDN"T I do this?!?!?!? :-)

Well pal if you're crazy then you have a lot of company. We all get the itch that has to be scratched. I just got my Natural Towers. I am so glad I waited. They are just fantastic. And woefully under priced! There I said it, WAY UNDERPRICED!. So get them now before Dave comes to his senses. What are you going to use as a Center? The new one Dave's working on?

Haven't read about the new center. Using an original Sierra right now.

I'll probably put my order in for the towers this week but need piano black, which appears to already be pre-sold out, to match the other speakers.

Is there mention of price on the NrT's and Sierra towers anywhere? Do we call in to get this info? I need to start buttering up my wife. :)

There is a High Gloss Black Tower which may be more like the other Piano Black. I would ask Dave/Ascend this question directly. I seem to remember reading this in the 50+ pages of Tower Talk. There may be High Gloss Black Towers still available.

The Piano Black Towers are a cut above what most would consider Piano Black from what I remember and High Gloss Black is supposed to be like the more common piano black.

I have piano black Sierra 1s and high gloss black Towers. The Sierra 1s are a true mirror finish. The high gloss black are just that. They have a glossy finish and light reflects, but not true images. You can check out my pics in the last couple pages of the Tower thread. I still have a true piano black center channel and piano black Rythmik sub. You really can't tell that there is a difference unless you are critically examining the speakers. For the price difference between the high gloss black and the piano black Towers, I'm happy to go with high gloss.

If you have the room and the money.... go for it!

I'm a fellow 4311ci owner, and am very much looking forward to a full 11.2 setup. I'm at regular 7.1 right now, 340SEs in front, HTM-200s side and rear surrounds. Very happy with them, and will be putting in 4 more HTM-200SEs for heights and wides. Eventually I'll upgrade the regular HTM-200s to the SE version.

My friends think *I'm* nuts. They would probably have you committed. :D

Do you enjoy what the wides do for you?

Lol. Just a thought, but that's pretty expensive to upgrade all the Sierra's to NRTs. If you pick up towers and use Sierras as surrounds, I'd suggest leaving the surround Sierras as is and using the extra money to spring for the STC in the center...

@Gollyjer

I'm really glad I found your thread because I'm still contemplating on setting up our first HT build with the Sierra 1nrt as the LCR front soundstage paired with an SVS PB13-Ultra all powered by an Onkyo 809 with an Emotiva XPA-3. But was wondering. Since the Sierra 1s are bookshelf speakers, do you ever feel your PB13-Ultra ever drowns them out? My main concern is the Sierra 1nrt Center Speaker since I'm mainly a movie guy so dialog is VERy important with my purchase. Any feedback would be great!

A subwoofer should never "drown out" anything else, just add to the sound. Unfortunately, this isn't always the case, and it generally has nothing to do with the subwoofer, and more to do with room peaks and nulls. Proper sub placement, room treatments and crossover settings can help a lot.
I also found electronic EQ helps a lot. Audyssey XT32 really did wonders for my subwoofer. It's really "part of the team" now, with the rest of my speakers. Audyssey tamed the beast.
I find it sad that people complain about Audyssey "reducing the bass" when actually what it's doing is making it sound like it should, instead of "drowning out" the other speakers.

@S_rangeBrew

Thanks for the reply & your input. I'm also contemplating the 340SE setup as well. How do you find the 340SE center? How is the dialog? Do you ever find yourself having to constantly raise or lower the volume to hear dialog or during an action sequence? Do you power your entire setup via the Denon or do you have power amps? I apologize if I'm asking too many questions. Its just our family's first HT Build & I cant demo these sepakers in person, so I'm trying to research as much user input as I can....cheers!
