Schubert on a fortepiano, played by Jorg Ewald Dahler.

I've always had mixed feelings/experiences with period instruments - even though they're more historically accurate, I generally prefer modern instruments. Probably partly because I'm used to them, but also because they tend to be easier to play in tune, especially horns.

But I'm really liking this - the fortepiano softens the tone and makes forte sections easier on the ears, and I feel like I'm closer to what Schubert intended.

Here's a link:

Interesting, I listened to the short sample, it sounds like a performance (and recording), with good dynamic. I love that in music, got to explore this more.

Tonight there's Keola Beamer Hawaiian slack-key guitar:

If you liked that, you might like a performance on a modern piano even more - they have a broader dynamic range:

Album Schubert: Piano Sonata D568; 6 Moments musicaux , Franz Schubert by Mitsuko Uchida | Qobuz: download and streaming in high quality (https://www.qobuz.com/us-en/album/schubert-piano-sonata-d568-6-moments-musicaux-mitsuko-uchida/0002894701642)

She takes more liberties with tempo, but is arguably more expressive.

Also, for great dynamics, you might check out Beethoven symphonies:

Album Bruno Walter Conducts Beethoven , Ludwig van Beethoven by Bruno Walter | Qobuz: download and streaming in high quality (https://www.qobuz.com/us-en/album/bruno-walter-conducts-beethoven-bruno-walter/0886445315233)

Walter makes Beethoven sound more beautiful than Beethoven probably intended, I think. And musicians loved working with him.

The new Jack White record "Fear of the Dawn" is his most consistent effort in a long while. All of his records have great songs, but this is the first one I've heard with no filler tracks that I want to skip over. Sounds great on my Sierra 2EX's as well!

Album The Room, Harold Budd | Qobuz: download and streaming in high quality (https://www.qobuz.com/us-en/album/the-room-harold-budd/0075678338267)

I hadn't heard of him - he's apparently a pretty well-known minimalist/ambient composer who worked with Brian Eno, among others.

If you don't like that genre, you won't like this. I found it interesting, and will listen to more of his stuff.

I always operated the assumption that REM made a couple interesting records in the 80s then turned into whiny sellout beyatches. The other day I saw their record "New Adventures in Hifi" recommended over and over in a 90s music thread on another forum.

Just spun my vinyl copy of Jimi Hendrix Are You Experienced? It's the new UHQR pressing, limited to 20,000 copies worldwide. Very impressive -- awesome dynamics, extremely quiet (not one pop or click). Pricey but likely to retain/increase in value considering what past UHQR pressings from Acoustic Sounds are going for.

Holy crap. This forum has introduced me to some GREAT music.

I saw Pineapple Thief at Amplified Live in Dallas on Friday night, and I don't think I've ever enjoyed a concert more. The band was tight, the venue was wonderful, and seeing and hearing Gavin Harrison in person was everything I expected it to be. Bruce Soord was a very charismatic showman and really engaged with the audience - something I didn't expect. To top things off, a minute before the band took the stage, a couple came up to me and invited me to sit with them in the VIP area because they had an extra seat due to a no-show in their group. So I saw the concert comfortably seated right in front of the stage while a waiter brought be free drinks :)

A few pics from the concert are attached. Now my wife got me tickets to see Porcupine Tree in Boston in September - by chance we are going to be in New England for a wedding while they are there, so this was my birthday present. I'm excited for that one!

Indeed. I was very lucky to get to see Soundgarden when they toured with Nine Inch Nails (I'm a big NIN fan) and got tickets in the second row center. Amazing show.

Fantastic! Pineapple Thief is an incredible band. They are playing in San Diego this Thursday. I was planning on going but unfortunately, the timing doesn't work as it my daughter's end-of-the-year banquet for Stunt is also that night. She will be receiving her Varsity Letter, so I must be there, otherwise i'd be going to the concert. They are also playing in up in Los Angeles, but that is quite a drive but if I can find someone to join me, I will be there.

If I didn't recommend it already Mammoth WVH's album it is also pretty good if you want bass. If you don't like it it's at least got a giant crab picture on it so that makes it worthwhile for that alone. Curious to see what he does next.

Great choices, Dave! I first saw him in 1987 at Mud Island in Memphis, then; Redondo Beach, CA @ The Strand (1988), back in Memphis during Memphis In May Musicfest around 1993. Finally in 2006 or so @ The New Daisy Theater. Unbelievable artist, and in concert; hang on!!! Lol!!!! Amazing!!

You are a wise person laserllama. Van Halen is IMO the greatest American rock band ever, and Edward Van Halen is my all time favorite musician by a long shot. Like many kids who grew up in the 80s, EVH was the main person who inspired me to learn the guitar. Van Halen always gets regular play on my home stereo. Stared on another thread and maybe mentioned already, but on the new ELX Towers so far the Blue Man Group's "Complex Rock Tour" album is about the best percussion demo track I've found, with all of the PVC pipes and toms and bass and stuff.

SOOOO good on the ELX's. Needs to be in your demo track rotation IMHO :)

And totally. They were my first favorite rock band and are still my favorite. His synthesizer stuff stuff (not so much Jump, but like everything) is good too. Got to see them a few times, first time being rather late in like 2006. So good and MUCH heavier than expected!

Eva Cassidy - Live at Blues Alley on 45 rpm vinyl, based on recommendation elsewhere on this forum. Really good album although I'm done ordering vinyl from Amazon - first one they sent the wrong album, second time there was a big scuff on one side. Re-ordered from Elusive Disk and a very good pressing (albeit not 100% perfect - I'm guessing it's the manufacturer)

This morning; 'Dissolution' - The Pineapple Thief (LP)

Robert; For the past couple of weeks, I have had that very Eva Cassidy LP set in my Acoustic Sounds shopping cart along with ELO's 'Eldorado' newly released MoFi LP! ;)

When buying new records, Acoustic Sounds is my goto shop for most. I also buy quite a bit from Burning Shed in England when it comes to Porcupine Tree, and The Pineapple Thief, and a few others not readily available domestically.
Both Acoustic Sounds & Burning Shed are happy to remove records from the sleeves when packing to avoid seem splits while in transit. For pre-owned, Discogs has been good overall with only one bad experience.

A few months back, I was visiting George Merrill at his shop, Analog Emporium, and he put on Eva Cassidy's "Songbird".
Really nice record!

Thanks for the tip on Burning Shed in the UK. I've also found some gems on Discogs, both new and used. I was using Acoustic Sounds quite a bit a year or so ago but their shipping seems to take much longer than Elusive Disc, at least for me, using the same USPS media mail.

Riverside is fantastic, I believe I recommended them a long time ago.

Since you like them, be sure to also check out OSI, Antimatter, and My Sleeping Karma. OSI "Blood" is terrific, listening to it right now.

Riverside's latest release, ID.Entity is very good, but may favorite from them is Shrine Of New Generation Slaves, every album is very good.

The two below are on the way..

Rapid Eye Movement

I also have Reality Dream Trilogy & Eye of the Soundscape, & Wasteland Tour 2018 - 2020 incoming.

In my reseach, I discovered, Lunatic Soul. Last week, I received, Fractured. Really enjoy it!!

I heard the song "Melody" by The Rolling Stones a few weeks ago on some random playlist. Fantastic song but I'd never heard it before - been a very casual Stones listener, never really dug into their music. Anyway, this made me wonder how many other great songs they've made that I'd never heard, which, well - led me to listen to every one of their 25 studio albums. I finally finished this journey last night.

Holy. Crap. Whole new appreciation. They have made a LOT of great music, most of it way better than the standard hits. Their early stuff rocks. Their late stuff rocks. Consistent great music from one end of their career to the other. Very little if any filler on any records (compared to the Beatles who stuffed every record with throwaway songs.)

Anyway, in case anyone wants to check it out, here's a playlist I made of the great Stones songs you likely never heard (full disclosure there are some Stones standards on here - the ones I really like). https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0jNPSm0yptCo8ff2EfAV4i?si=Wjg_tGhfQeWKIvv4QDX-lA&app_destination=copy-link

'Walking on a Flashlight Beam' - Lunatic Soul

Excellent recommendation, this album is fantastic - I listen to a lot of Lunatic Soul and enjoy all of their work.

I was watching a crazy foreign horror flick on Netflix the other night. In one of the scenes, they played a remix of the old 10cc classic "I'm Not In Love" It sounded amazing and the singer's voice impressed me (the movie was good too)

Anyway, found the remix version on Spotify and the artist is Kelsey Lu. Her only album "Blood" is excellent, listened to it several times in the past few days ;) Check it out....

Yes, vocals could have been better throughout. I did think "Pigs (3 different)" was good. Probably my least favorite vocals were on "Sheep" although I did like they mixed the "Lord is my shepherd" bit with more volume (vs. the original) despite not a fan of his rendition of it.

You need to listen to this on speakers with good bass capabilities (it sounds terrible on phone or iPad speaker obviously)I discovered her over 20 years ago, keeps putting out great stuff.

The Warning.

I think of this band as flag-bearers for rock in Gen Z. They're about the same ages as my kids (ages 18-23). They are one of the best responses to the (incorrect) claim that rock is dead or dying. They are gifted musicians and talented performers, and all three of them sing.

This is a whole show—105 minutes—professionally shot in 4K with excellent sound (drums are really well-mic'd for people who care about that), not some random dude in the crowd with an iPhone.

Well worth a watch!

I saw Staind about a month ago with Godsmack, I didn't expect this concert to be as good as it was, but it might easily have been one of the best shows I have seen in a decade. Godsmack was incredible and their new album is great, and Aaron Lewis (Staind) is simply one of the best vocalists I have ever heard. His vocal range and control is 2nd to none. I enjoy his work with Staind and his now much more popular solo country work. The new Staind album "Confessions of the Fallen" is excellent.

I think in some ways, Waters has lost his mind. He is constantly pushing his political agenda and I read many people walked out of his shows due to too much talking and pushing his beliefs. I really wish artists would stick to what they do best, making music. I have utmost respect for David Gilmour, not so much for Waters anymore.
