View Full Version : Sierra-1's with Outlaw 7125?

I've been eyeing a combination of Sierra-1's LCR (with CBM-170's for surrounds) and and an Outlaw 7125 amp as an upgrade to my HT. Both happen to be on sale right now, so my trigger finger is getting itchy. My only concern is that the Sierra's are lower efficiency than my current speakers, and I want to make sure that 125W is enough for my situation.

My room is L-shaped, with a dining room attached off the left of the living room, and the TV is in the "corner" of the L. The living room dimensions are roughly 19'x14', with a cathedral ceiling averaging at about 9'. The dining room is about 11'x12'x7.5'. Combined volume is roughly 3500ft^3, but both room also have an open doorway to the main hallway and the rest of the house.

Seating distance is about 10ft from the the LCR (~7ft from sides, and ~5.5ft from sr.back). Usage is probably 80/20 HT/music, and the loudest I generally use for movies is about 15-25dB below reference. I have a subwoofer to handle the lowfreq duties (SVS 20-39CS; looking to upgrade that sometime soon, too...).

If I've done my math right, max volume from an individual Sierra-1 should be ~97.5dB, or 7.5dB below reference, at the main seat. That seems like enough headroom for my listening habits.

So, did I do my math right? Does anyone think I'd be under-powering the Sierra's?

Thanks,
-- Dave

I think you should be fine with that combination. The sierra's really mate well with Outlaws (I have 7700). Give Dave F. a call and he can advise you better than most of us.

The 7125 (125 watts/channel) will be more than enough power for the Sierras. I'm driving mine with a Bryston 3B and it's plenty of power at 130 watts. Mind you, those are Bryston watts ;-)

I have 5 Sierra's with a NAD T775 which is 7x100 and my living area is 15x25x10 open to my dining area and kitchen also have a hallway that leads to the bedrooms (around 5500cuft) sitting 11ft away and I sometimes listen at reference with no problems. I can only do that when no one else is home. Also something to think about is if you run a sub that will take quite a bit a load off the amp as it is only needs to produce sounds above your Xover point.
