Yesterday I joined the Ascend family -- ordered 3 Sierras for the front and 2 170s for the rears. Big step up for my music/HT listening, moving from a Polk RM6600 set that's about 5 years old. With all the speakers I considered, there was just something about the reviews and the way Ascend presents itself that made me feel good about it.

I also have a tip for anyone thinking of a receiver, amp, DVD player, etc. I was pricing the higher-end Yamaha receivers, and every legit dealer was pretty much the same. Then I followed the advice on the J&R website to call for the latest pricing. Saved about 20% off J&R's and everyone else's web price and got free shipping. I think I'll do this with any electronics that aren't normally discounted. (I'm not a shill for J&R, but I do like a good deal!)

Two questions:

How long does it usually take from order to delivery?

Is half a 50lb. bag of sand each enough for the metal speakers I ordered from Ascend, or do I need a full bag for each?

When the speakers ship, you should get a shipping notice via email....or you can just call them.

I don't know how much sand those stands take. Filling is optional.

What about using gravel instead of sand?

You could put anything you want in there as long as it is clean, dry, and does not cause corrosion.

Sand is just more dense because there will be less gaps.

I have used play sand in my stands I bought the bag at home depot

Half a 50 lb. bag per stand, or a whole bag?

Oh yea...there's a secret handshake. We just haven't decided to let you in on it yet. Not sure you're cool enough.

I'm not cool, but I'm fairly smart. Which is more important here?

which stands do you have ? when I had the 340's along with the stands I'm not to sure how much sand I used but I put about half full and they were very heavy !

The SP-30, for use with a pair of Sierras.

So typical of you cool guys to think that.

I doubt the SP30 stands hold anywhere near the amount of sand the TP24 stands do.

If anyone here knows the inner dimensions of the stand, we could figure out the volume easily enough. And 50lb of dry sand = half a cubic foot.

I bet you would have more than enough if you picked up two 50lbs. bags of dry play sand.

Do you think one bag would definitely be too little for both stands?

No...but to be safe I would get two.

You also don't have to fill them all the way. If you wanted to, and one bag is not enough, just head out and get more.

I used about a half a bag for one pair of SP-30. I still have not filled my TP-24's yet that my sierra's are on. BTW I have 170SE's on the SP-30's. Thanks to Curtis and Dave for all the tips including earthquake putty.

Thanks to all for the advice. I found earthquake/museum putty at Amazon.com -- very inexpensive and customers rate it highly.
