Dumb luck!!

I have a very bright room, and it has been driving me nuts. Yesterday, friends of mine gave me a couch and loveseat, and incredibly my room went from bright to somewhere closer to warm sounding. I am still going to get accoustical traps, but now I think I can get away with 4-6 instead of the tons I thought I needed before. I have not used a SPL meter yet, I just got one, just haven't had the time to use it yet.
Is it possible that the furniture made this much of a difference?

Yes, anything that can absorb sound will change the dynamic of the room as far as reverb and sound. There will eventually be a point of diminishing return to your ears but the more soft furniture you have, the less bright the sound in certain areas NOT directly in front of the speaker!
