Small impromptu shoot out at my studio...

Ascend 340se's
Dynaudio Acoustics BM6's
BW 601 s3's
Acsend 170's

Signal path:

Marantz CD53 --> Allen and Heath 2 Track 3 --> Bryston 4B SST --> ADCOM GFS-6 II --> Monster Cable

Ascends 340: Bright, great imaging, bass light but accurate (surprising)
Dyns: highs smooth, imaging ok, good bass response, hi mids a little muddy
BW's: sounded muted, bass boomy, boxy
Ascend 170's consistent with the 340's, not as bright

Overall the Ascends for me are great in the studio, translate well and my mixes are way better. Surprised about the BW's but pleasantly :)

Interesting you found the 340's brighter than the 170's.

It could be because the 170's are the older models? Different tweeter...

They are very close, but I was surprised on how light the low end is on the 340's even with two bass drivers

Are you talking about the 170 and 340 classic or SE models? The bass on the 340SE extends into the upper 40's so although they don't "reverberate" bass like a sub... they do a pretty good job. Could it be more, yes. I do think they match well and seemlessly with the HSU's. I have the SE's and x-over @ 60Hz... they sound really full and nice.

The 170's I have are the classics, the 340's are the SE's.

And I do have a sub, but for my purposes I only use it for reference.

I'm surprised at the lack of bass compared to the Dyns and BW's, I thought there would be more.

Although I have not seen measurements for those specific models, the Dyns and B&W's I have seen measurements for lately have rises in the bass region, so perhaps this is what you heard or are used to.

Could be... both the BW and Dyns seem muddy with mids compared to the 340's.

It's a good thing, since my mixes are translating better I just really surprised.
