If any of you frequent the AVS Forum, you may have seen this thread already. But Dave F. made this post on a thread called "Does Anyone Not Like Ascends" to clarify some confusion about the drivers.

The whole thread is a nice read (as is the Ascend SE Owner's thread), as a testament to the quality of the speakers. But I just thought I'd share this. I hope Dave doesn't mind.

I read Davef's post there. I knew he had worked closely with Seas to develop the new tweeters but I wasn't aware of how much R&D he had put into the new mid-drivers. Cool. I like the fact that Ascends are engineered from the ground up and not just some aftermarket parts thrown into a cabinet.

I wonder how much that holds true of the classics? Were the drivers custom made, or custom"ized" for the originals?

In the "classics", I know the drivers were not "off the shelf". As for the woofer, I know similar drivers were available to the public, not sure about the tweeters.

I would imagine that Dave did whatever he could to get what he wanted, but as a start-up company, it was probably more difficult than maybe it is now.

Thanks for the heads-up Curtis. I'm away from most of the forums this time of year so it's real helpful when someone points out something like this.

Audax also sold tweeters that were visually identical, but I expect were different in performance. I know Dave mentioned the Audax drivers being custom orders.

Well, I played drums for 13 years, I STILL own my Tama Granstar Custom set, in Cherry Wine, NOT plastic road trim, Actual PAINT!!
Here:
http://www.tama.com/history/history_detail.asp?i=106

Very Nice kit, unfortunately I haven't been playing them for a few reasons...
Most of my Musician friends are either out of the loop with family, or real jobs, the others are junkies, or in jail!
The other unfortunate reason is where I live, In a Townhouse :(

I would have preferred the ArtstarII(warmer, due to being Maple shells instead of Birch), but I got offered a great deal on my kit from a local dealer, that I just couldn't pass up(how's 1500 off sound to YOU?).

One of the things I actually LOVE about the 170se's, is their ability to produce drums and percussion instruments cleanly, I mean I'm hearing DEPTH/Clarity/Tone and Ring that I haven't heard very often in the past.
