Hey
I am planning to buy the CMT-340 front & center. The 170's for the rear.
I will use them mostly for movies. Are the 340's over kill and should I go with the 170's all around? (except center) Thanks for any help.

I wold say it depends on the size of your room, how loud you like it, and what amplifier your using. I would not be afraid to use the 170 as a center speaker.

Really depends on room and budget. The 170's are a helluva speaker. The 340's take it to the next level...especially for larger listening rooms. For movies, and without knowing your room size, I'd be inclined to recomend an all 340 front end and suggest the 200 for surround duty.

As has been said; it depends on budget and room. The environment (room layout, materials, etc.) is important as well as the size of the room.

I've had the 340 - 170 combination for about a year and love it! My HT room is 12 x 17 and they fill it nicely. These are great speakers and you won't go wrong with this... but what sub are you getting?

cheers

Thanks all for the help
My room size is 32' x 16'. I plan to put the rears about 15' or 16' back. I am thinking about the VTF2 MK2 sub.Have no idea as to amp. That will be my next project. Any recommendations? Again thanks for the help.

I setup my Parents with 340's up front, and 170's for surrounds for a 5.1 setup in a similar sized room......I think you will need a larger subwoofer though.

When you say "rears".....do you mean the rear surrounds in a 7.1 setup?

Yeah, go for the 340s with a room that big. You should also consider a STF3 or VTF3-MKII sub for that large of a room. Heck you might even want 2 big subs :D

Thanks guys
The info is just what I was looking for. For now I will be doing 5.1 maybe 7.1 down the road. You all were very kind and helpful. I will go with the bigger sub. If I use two subs should they be the same size and how should they be placed?

If you are doing 5.1, then the surrounds should be to the sides of the listenning position......not 15' back(if that is what you meant).

Have a look at this:
http://dolbylabs.com/consumer/home_entertainment/roomlayout.html

If using two subs is the way you want to go, then two of the same subs would be easier to intergrate than two different subs. Placement is dependent on room, acoustics, and what you are trying to achieve(ie, flat response vs. higher output).

Sorry to be a pain but I'm spending a lot of money and want to do it right.
If I go with 7.1 can I use the 170's for my surround speakers with 340 every where else? It would save me a couple of bucks if I could. Also if I go with 2 subs can I use lower power or should I stick with 2 STF3's? Thanks again.

Absolutely! For a slightly more economical option consider using the 200's in all the surround positions. Most of movie audio will be presented thru the front 3 speakers...so spend most of your money on them.

There is always the VTF-HO if you are willing to wait a bit for it. Another good option is SVS. Their Ultra drivers are pretty amazing. The plus drivers are awfully good too.

As for your mains I think 340s in front and 170s for surround will be great.

The HTM-200 is working for me, in a 13x16ft room. I was thinking of going with a bigger speaker, but this sounds fine. And they are light enough so I can put them anywhere and not worry too much about mounting it on the drywall.
