I am looking into the best use of money. Around $700.

My system:

Denon Avr-1603
Pioneer DV-525 (Used as my CD player as well)
mains: 170's
center: 340
surounds: Bosse (with out the extra s) 141's
HSU STV-3

What do you think?

I can assure you that 200's as surrounds would be an upgrade. You might also consider the Panasonic 55 receiver. There's a discussion here.

I like the rest of your system as is.

Ya, I really have draged my feet about replacing my sourounds. It just doesn't seem like all that much sound really comes from them anyway. The 141's really don't sound bad, as I have them wire in another room as well. I have heard that ascends might have something in the works for dedicated sourounds but I'm not sure if they are still going farward with that.
I have considered a new reciever and also the 340 mains. Really the only thing I am less likelly to do is upgrade my center and sub.
Any other suggestions out there?

Without knowing much about your room, I'd vote for pushing the 170s to surround duty and adding some 340Ms. Or, add another pair of 170s, which leaves $$$ leftover for a new receiver. Either way, ditch the Bosses.

Why is it that you cant mention the word **** (Bosse) here in this forum?

I think it has something to do with preventing Google searches for Blose speakers from finding this site. I think that's what I read on another forum at least that had the same policy.

I'm probably completely wrong though so take my explanation with a grain of salt. :o

It's a heated subject on many of the other forums and I think Ascend would rather not have that type of thread happen on their forum. As a former (way former) owner of said speakers, I think it's a good idea to keep that discussion out. I might express my opinion and Amar's lawyers might come a callin. :p

I forgot to post that my room is 16' x 15' with a 10' by 8' cased opening into a 16' X 30' room. Does this help?

i'd get all ascends just for more system synergy, and put the previous speakers on ebay. next, maybe buy more media or signup for netflix? if you're all set on media, just save the cash.
try the htm-200. remember ascend has a 30 day trial so if you find that whatever speaker you try doesn't suit your needs, simply contact ascend and see where you can go next. :)

I'd second BGHD's suggestion to get a pair of 340 for the front and push
your 170s to surround. I'm not sure though, how much $$$ you can
recover from selling your current BOSS surrounds. If a lot, you may have
enough $$$ to get a new receiver (don't forget you can also sell your
current receiver to get more $$). Or, another option will be to push
your BOSS speakers to surround back and all of a sudden you have a
7.1 system :)
