I am selling my current rear surrounds to buy matching Ascend speakers. I really "need" the HTM-200 but am being tempted by the CBM-170's even though I really should get the 200's.

They are going to be sitting on top of an upright piano and will be close to the wall so both the smaller size and the sealed design of the 200's would be better.

Must........Not..........Buy..........170's....... .....Please............

Heeeeeeeeeeeelllllllllllllllllllllllllpppppppppppp p!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can do it, man! The 200's are more than enough for your system. Close-wall placement is NOT port-friendly. My surrounds are sealed and work extremely well. The 170's are bigger than most people expect, so beware.

Don't give in to temptation.......it only leads to the Darkside! :D

I'm quite satisfied with the 200's doing the surround duty. I believe the major reason to go with 170's is if you're into MC music (DVD-A, SACD). The 200's don't go as low as the 170's. I don't have experience with the 170's but I can't see that they would do a noticably better job as surrounds, especially given your (and mine) current conditions.

Don't do it. The 200s are fine.

The size is indeed deceiving. The 170s were much larger than I expected. I should have gotten the 200s, but I'm going to stick with the 170s. Maybe get 4 200s for 7.1 and move the 170s into a 2 channel setup eventually.

I am really trying to resist.

I'll have to wait to see how much the stuff I am selling on fleebay goes for. I might also mock up some speakers from cardboard and put it where the speakers are going to go to see how big they look.

I just don't want to have the "what could have been" feeling after I get them. I don't listen to SACD now but your never know what I might get into while I still have these speakers.

Hey, somebody go on fleebay and buy my old Paradigm PDR-10 sub so I can get something good with the money. :)

It is awesome. Way better than the SVS I replaced it with. Really. I mean it. I wouldn't lie to you guys. ;)

I replaced it because the sonic impacts were starting to hurt my ribcage.

Well, I got all my stuff sold and I think I have managed to fight off the dark side and am going to purchase the 200's as soon as all the money exchanges have finished and the buyers have received the shipments safely.

I think it is funny that the person buying my old speakers is from very near where Ascend speakers are manufactured. I guess he should have checked his own backyard for good speakers. :p

Well, I fell to the dark side.

I just knew that if I ordered the 200's I would always think "what could have been." I sent in an e-mail to Ascend and Dave answered that I would have enough room behind the speakers for the rear ports as long as I was crossing over at 80 Hz. He said I needed a minumum of 2.5" and I will have about 5". Since I am crossing at 80 Hz I went ahead and put in my order.

Just call me weak I guess. :o At least I didn't order 340's.

Just a matter of time. :D

I think my wife would divorce me. :(

At least until the next house. :D

Now, if you're wife thinks the 170s are too big, you'll be thinking "what if" about the 200's! :D

I think she has grown accustomed to my illness. :o

My next house is probably going to have a 7.1 system with all 340's and some ridiculous subwoofer (or two.) :D

Q: Why?

A: Why not.

I tell her that at least I'm not out spending all our money at the nudie bars. ;)

Psychology always works. I replace 'nudie bars' with 'golf trips', which almost always works.
