Default Opinion on HD video calibration?

So, I am a proud new owner of a 47" HDTV, rear projection LCD. Very happy with the picture.

I read a lot of getting TV's calibrated by ISF professionals. These professional video calibration guys charge around $400 per TV....and spend 2-4 hours working on the TV. I have also read that this type of work does wonders for the picture.

What do you guys think? Anybody have any experience with this?

    Hey Curtis,
I know some people swear by ISF calibration, and others who
think it ruined their picture. I approach the picture part of my HT
much the same way you approach the audio part..."if it ain't broke,
    don't fix it".

Or better yet, if you like your picture the way it is now, then yay!!

I'd run through the vid calibration stuff on DVE though. Mainly
white point and blacker-than-black. I had a tricky time with my
plasma til I got the brightness controls set right.

Nuts Rick! That is the first possible negative I have read. Now what am I going to do? Oh well...I have time to think about it.

I used Avia to calibrate my li'l ol 20" set. Fortunately it has four video status settings, so I can flip between the "calibrated" theater mode and standard, game and dynamic modes. I think the calibrated setting is darker and softer than I am used to, but in a darkened room is more movie theater-like. My son always changes it to the standard mode.........makes SpongeBob have more "Zip"!

In the end, they're your eyes. Just as mentioned above, like audio, we all have our own preferences. I say save the money and send it to me!!!

Thanks Guys...I have actually just started doing the research on this. Have not really looking at threads.....just the preliminary "asking friends".

    Hi Curtis,

I just had the JVC Senior Field Service Engineer at my home this morning. He was servicing my HDTV ( a few very minor problems ) I did ask him what he thought about third-party calibration... For any of the new digital TVs, he does not recommend it at all.

After watching him work (I am now even more impressed with this TV), there is simply not that much that can be done to "adjust" these TVs...

    Hope this helps!
