In a 7.1 configuration, do the rear or the side surrounds get more info? I was under the impression it was the rears, but I have been known to be wrong on occasion.

I think it depends on the source material. DPLIIx uses all 7
channels derived from 2ch or 5.1ch sources.

I recently went from 5.1 to 7.1. Although there is a nice difference, in my room, it was not earth shattering. DPLIIx does add a more enveloping experience, but I think it is much more beneficial in larger rooms.

I'll probably just get another set of 170's. The set I have now in my 5.1 setup work wonderfully.

Curtis, I've been doing some research and from what I've been told, about the same amount of info gets sent to the rears and sides. That being said, another pair of 170's would do the trick, but with multi-channel audio being something I want to get into, another pair of 340's sounds like a better choice. A good DVD-Audio or SACD played on 5 340's and my VTF3-MkII would be amazing.

here is another stick in the mud....

The spec for positioning of the speakers for multi-channel music is different than DD or DTS.

As for information sent to sides and rears in a movie....remember that most movies are still 5.1

I'd just leave them set up for DD and DTS. Can't have it both ways. Curtis, I was talking about a 7.1 setup running DPLIIx. Just wanted to know whether to use the 340's as rears or sides, but since it will be used somewhat for multi-channel music, they'll be rears. I think I've made up my mind on another pair of 340's. If I get them before the move, I'll box up the 170's till then.

When I conceived my 7.1 system, I set it up with the idea
that I would use it about 90% for movies, and 10% music/
multichannel music. I have 4 170's across the rear, thinking
that they are matched well enough with the 340's (L,C,R) that
music (and surround on DVD's for that matter) wouldn't be an
issue as far as "matching speakers" is concerned.

What does everyone think? If music is your main thing, should
you go all 170's or all 340's? What about with movies?

    Rick
