another thing to consider with receivers is reliability. i was going to buy an H/K until i started reading about all the bugs and faults that plague their current line of receivers.
now i'm trying to figure out which receiver is going to be the best combo of reliability, features, and price. seems like it may be the denon 2809 but i'm still evaluating.
I have a 2809 complementing the 340 SE's and it is simply amazing !!

Hi:
I have been researching AV receivers for several weeks.
Just bought the Onkyo 705.
Also considered all the Denons in the MSRP range of $1000 to $1500.
The reasons I got the Onkyo are:
1) Got it new for $395 plus free shipping (B&H Photo) -- MSRP $800.
2) This model has a tremendous FAQ page at http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=935808.
Agonized a long over whether I should buy new or refurbished.
Decided to go new for the better warranty.
For Denon refurbs go to Dakmart.com.
For Onkyo refurbs go to accessories4less.com or shoponkyo.com.
My plan is to eventually add an external amp and use this receiver as a pre-pro.
Still deciding on my Ascend speakers.

That's a great bang-for-the-buck receiver.
Sierra-1 - Mains+Center
Surrounds - HTM200SEs (x4 in back, and x2 Atmos)
Sub - SVS PB-2000
Receiver - Onkyo TX-RZ1100
Oppo Darbee Edition Blue Ray
Sony 4K blu ray player
I'm now the proud owner of a Denon AVR-2809ci.
My setup of 2.0 Sierras sounded great with my previous Onkyo, but the new receiver really makes them shine. Improved clarity, voice projection, fuller sound... couldn't be happier!
The Onkyo just wasn't doing justice to the Sierra's quality.
Next steps:
1) F12SE sub (2.1)
2) Sierra center (3.1)
3) Very small piano black surrounds (5.1)
Congrats...the 2809 is a very nice receiver!
You won't be sticking with Ascend for surrounds?
