Do you have a disc player already?

I would look at the less expensive Panasonic digital amp receivers.

I do have a CD player from another source. The panasonics all seem to be multichannel. Wouldnt I do better getting something 2 channel for that same price range. I have tossed around a refurbished Onkyo 8511 or Denon 395 or a new 8211 or 295.

    ahhh....OK...so this is strictly two-channel.

Then maybe something from Harman Kardon:

Also look at eBay and Audiogon.

While the Panny digitals are multi-channel they are receiving great acclaim for 2 channel and you'd be set for multi if you decide later that you want it. Just remember to use the digital connections.

Go to the, "just ordered my 170s" thread and read disastar's thoughts on his digital Panny and 170s combo.

The panasonic looks good, and the reviews are good too. Any opinion on the panasonic Panasonic SA-HE100K? The same price, a little bigger, and about the same features. I can't figure out the diferences between the models?

    Thanks again,
    Chris

That doesn't have the digital amps that are what are making the XR series so acclaimed. The signal stays digital all the way in the digitals hence the importance of digital connects.

One more question, with the 170's, do I need a receiver that is rated to handle 4 ohms? Most recievers that I have seen (including the XR25), are only rated to 6 or 8.

    Thanks Again,
    Chris

The 170's are rated 8 ohm.

Randy is right....the minimal impedence of the 170's is 4ohm...but average is 8ohm.
