I used to have a lower priced Onkyo receiver. It's volume control ramped differently than most receivers. On most modern receivers, you have to turn the volume control up quite high to get loud volume. On the Onkyo, 40 out of 80 on the volume was quite loud. This doesn't mean the Onkyo has more power than the Denon 2805 I have now. It just means they ramp up the volume differently than other receivers.

Quite right - I saw that the volume knob was half way but it was louder and it drove a 3 woofer (300wrms per channel speakers)(not ascends).

What I will do is to find and audition the HK receivers

What was the sensitivity rating for the speakers? The amount of power they can handle is not indicative of how hard they are to drive.

When you audition HK receivers, and want to compare, you really need to use the same speakers and room.
