    Default dumb questions

Sorry if this is a year old question now.

How much better are the new CBM 170SEs over the old cbm 170s? The graphs look pretty close. Can someone point me to a comparative review? I searched a little but didn't find an answer. I will search some more.

I have another question - how much quality would one lose by running wires 50 feet from receiver to speakers? It is pretty thick monster type wire I found at a yard sale cheap - I think it meets the formula I once saw on one of these audio websites. At this point I would have to go to radio shack and compare thickness to tell you what gauge it is - but I think it is 14.

    Thanks

14 Gauge is fine at that length, alot of folks run 16awg.
    We're NOT talking 500Watts here!!

I personally don't know the difference between the new/old 170's, except that the SE's go about 10hz lower ( thats according to reading reviews of the classics, they keep mentioning 70hz, the SE's are spec'd at 58hz).
I THINK I've seen that mentioned a few times in reviews, maybe I'm wrong....
I THOUGHT I saw a refined tweeter as well, but I'm NOT certain about that.
Someone will be by soon to assist ya better than that.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

    Thanks for the response

    From the post by David

"Flat response to 22kHz" is the main improvement

"Brief summary of overall performance improvements:
    -------------------
Improved high-frequency extension, transparency and smoothness
Deeper bass with faster transient response, noticeably more "punch"
    Class-leading low distortion measurements
    Higher power-handling"

I think I understood all this - my question should have been "is it worth selling my old 170s and buying the new ones"

That's a tough question and one I struggled with. I bought a pair of 340SE's and compared them for over a month to the Classics. I decided the lower bass response made it worthwhile to keep the SE's and sell the Classics but in the long run, I probably would have been just as happy keeping the Classics.
Ascend does have the good return policy if you want to hear the difference for yourself. Good luck with your decision.
