Another new member here in a similar situation to the original poster. I am upgrading from a JBL cube speaker package and am debating about whether to go with the 340's or 170's as my mains. I am fairly set on a 340 center with 170 surrounds. My living room is fairly small (11' x 12') with hardwood floors. I plan on keeping the my current sub until I can upgrade in the near future.

The question is, will the 170's be adaquate as mains, even if I move to a larger house in the future? Will 3 of the 340's across the front be overkill?

    Thanks

In a room that small, 170's as mains would be fine. I use 170SE's for mains, 340C and 200's for surround. My room is 16X17X8 open to the Kitchen. I can get plenty loud!!

I've used 340's in a 9x12 room and it was overkill. The 170's would be just the ticket. If ya move to a larger space, you'll need more speakers anyway so the 170's won't go to waste if you step up to the 340's. I've heard we can have too many good speakers but I haven't yet found that to be true.

Yes Mike, the 170 SEs are plenty of speaker for that size room.
I have no issue at all running the 170s as mains, they sound fabulous.

    Have Fun

Thanks for the replies. I went ahead and ordered 4 170's and a 340 center channel. I couldn't pass these up with the $110 off sale going on until Jan. 15th. I'm looking forward to receiving them mid january and posting my impressions.

    Hey Folks,

Dusting off some old CD's this afternoon, while the SO is still at work, and the NEIGHBORS AREN'T HOME!!
    90DB Heaven!!
I don't get a chance to get to 90 very often.

    Pure Prairy League- Mint
    Carpenters, The Singles 1969-73- Unreal

Karen Carpenter had a great voice, Harmonies are spot on, and Richards arrangements are very well done IMO.
A little background hiss in the recordings, but they sound great other than that.
That voice of hers REALLY shows the strength of the 170se, it is unbelieveably clear.
Gonna put in Norah for a little loud action!!!
