I have not tried my 170s on their sides, but it would not harm them in any way. Many people use a 170 for their center channel in the horizontal position.

I'm definitely a newbie, so just wondering, when they have the 170 as center, I know the grill is different (cosmetic only of course). Could it be they rotated the tweeter as well? I believe they do this for the 340c (vs 340 left/right)

Nope....the 170 center and l/r versions are the same. The CMT-340 has diffuser lens which I believe is what needs to be rotated, the CBM-170 does not.
