    Default 170SE's, Marantz 2238, and... ???

    Hello all,

Here's my setup: Just bought a vintage Marantz receiver off ebay, model 2238B. I'm going to pick up a pair of 170SE's in the next week or so. This will be used 70/30 movies/music. I know this isn't ideal but the budget is tight and eventually I want to use the 170's either as rears or use them elsewhere for 2-channel with the marantz.

My question is, is there any way to hook a sub up to this setup to increase bass extension in movies? The only way I can think of is to hook it directly to my dvd player that has 5.1 SACD/HDDVD outputs (Samsung HD950). Is there something a receiver with 5.1 inputs is doing to the subwoofer signal or does it just act as a pass-through?

    Thanks,
    Blake

Just get a sub with speaker level input/output (many have this), then you take the speaker outputs from the Marantz into the sub, then the speaker level outputs from the sub to the 170s. I'm doing this with an old Marantz and a speaker/sub setup.
