    Default Ascend Speaker Limitations

I am currently driving 340's with a 70 WPC Yamaha A/V receiver. My upgrade plans include an Outlaw 990 Pre-amp and either an Outlaw 7500 5 channel amp or 5 separate Model 2200 Monoblocks. Either way I will be getting 200 WPC.

The question is; will the 340's and future 170 SE's be shredded by the Outlaw amps when cranking up the volume? I like to listen loud when watching DVD concerts and listening to DVD-Audio's. Secondly, is there any argument for monoblocks vs. a single 5-channel amp?

Thanks, look forward to your responses.

In addition, I will be using a sub crossed over at 80-100hz which will help reduce woofer movement.

    how big is your room?

Have you ever measured with an SPL meter how loud you like your music?

I drive my front 3 340's with Outlaw M-200 monoblocks (this is the previous model of the M-2200, just without balanced inputs). I can play them as loud as I can stand it without driving the Ascends into distress. As a general rule, it is easier to damage a speaker by not having enough power and clipping the signal than it is to hurt it with too much.

The room will be in the basement and is about 18x14. I do have an SPL meter but can't recall the measurments I was listening at. Could have been 85?

That's about the size of my room.

85dB peaks? No problem at all.

I'm curious about this question too.

The argument is that with monoblocks, each channel has its own seperate chassis/power supply/etc. thus not having any "contamination" with another channel.

Flexibility. People who don't listen to DVD-As or DVD concerts much can buy just 2 for their mains, then add another one for the center and/or the surrounds if they deem it necessary.
