Default Need advice on auditioning surrounds

So, I'm a complete and total novice with audio and I need help. I want to audition some speakers, specifically to determine if I like dipoles or direct speakers. Obviously, I should just listen, but remember, I'm a noob. If I know what to look for during these auditions, I would be much better off. I'd like some feedback on what to listen for (good/bad) when listening to the two different types of speakers.

    Thanks very much.

The most important advice I can give is to take music CDs and/or DVD movies with you that you like and that you are familiar with. There is no way you can judge the accuracy of a system if you aren't familiar with what the material is supposed to sound like.

Second, your ears are the best judge. Go with what YOU like and what you think sounds best.
