340's and other speakers

I have been reading thread after thread and it always seems that ascend speakers constantly get compared to speakers much more expensive than they are. Can anyone name any speakers that can compare to the 340se's or the 170se's for that matter that cost about the same amount of money?

The older 170s were compared to Energy C-3s here, and fared very well:

The C-3s originally retailed for $500, and at least until a while ago could be had for 1/2 that online from certain retailers.
