    Question DVD help

    Hey guys,

I need your expert advice. I know this is the wrong thread but this is the most used.

What is the difference in connections for a dvd player.

    1) Component from DVD straight to TV

    or

    2) Component to Receiver and then another component from Receiver to TV

Right now i have dvd straight to tv and was wondering what the difference between the two are?

    There really is no difference.

If you connect through the receiver, you gain the ability to switch video sources with the receiver. The downside is you may lose picture quality.

Depending on the receiver, you may also gain the receiver's on-screen-display by routing it through the receiver.

The down-sides are the potential for degraded quality (as curtis mentioned) and the need to have your receiver turned on (may not be a problem if you always turn it on anyway). Oh...and the need to buy another set of cables.

    Thumbs up

I run my system via the component switcher in my receiver. The Denon's and some others provide upconverting from composite and S-Video to component video out. This way I can send all my video to only one input on my TV. I've seen no degradation in picture quality doing this method. Check the specs on the receiver to see if it uses a high bandwidth component switch. I believe mine is good to 100Mhz, good enough for hi-def video.
