How big is your room? If the room is not that big, going 7.1 will not be a big deal. Otherwise, I think that idea will work.

the room is approx 18 by 13, with large openings on the one side. Are you saying you think it is better to stick to 170s around, except for the center, and keep it 5.1?
Is the reason to go with 200s at first a financial issue or placement issue? If that is the total size of the listening area, then I think 7.1 would be a "nice to have", but I don't think it would "blow you away".
