Alternative Stands for 170's?

While I really like the way the Omni stands look, I simply don't trust my kitten or my friends to not bump into the speakers (especially as I plan to go with 4 170's as my mains and surrounds).

Can anyone reccomend a similar stand that has a bracket system for attaching to the speakers (I know the omni stands now ship with velcro, but I really don't trust that either). The stands need to either be 36" or greater, or adjustable to at least that height, as the surrounds will be somewhat behind a couch.

I use Studio Tech SP-30 stands. Real solid units, but they don't "attach" to the speaker. They make 36" versions too. Check my webpage for what the 170s look like on them if you're interested.

I think if you can find something that you are able to fill with sand/lead shot that will make the stand stable. And then something like Quake Hold will firm up the speaker connection to the stand. http://www.kidsmartliving.com/quakeholdputty.html This was suggested to me by another forum member. I just seem to be hogging this forum today. My next question is does anyone have a measurement for the distance from the bottom of the 170 to the tweeter? If I end up going with the 340's as fronts, then with the matching stand, the tweeter will be at about 34 inches high. The original reason I wanted to use 36 inch stands was because the speakers (or at least one) will be completely behind part of the couch, the back of which is 36" high.

Granted there will still be a few feet of space between the speaker and the couch, but not a ton, the placement is turning out to be a weird issue. Should I just try to get the tweeter above the level of the couch? Or do I want the mains to be a bit higher than the matching stand will offer?

Basically I'm trying to figure what the effect of having the woofer below the level of the back of the couch will be, and what the effect of having the fronts and rears at different heights will be.

For Dolby Digital 5.1, 6.1...the recommendation for surrounds is for the tweeter to be above ear level.

For music, it is recommended to have all the tweeters at ear-level....speakers all the same height.

Well then maybe I will just have to go for the dolby reccomendation, since that will at least get most of the speaker above the level of the back of the couch. Considering the gap between the fronts and the rears, I don't think a few inches difference in height will be too noticable. Thanks!

I have a pair of Sanus Steel Foundations 30" stands, filled with sand, and attached with blu-tak. I find that they are *extremely* stable and barely move at all (even during the brief moments that my full-grown cats have used it as a stepping stool). They also come in 34" flavors.
