New Sierra 1s and a dead Yamaha AVR???
Hi All,
I was gifted a Yamaha RX-A720 receiver and decided to buy a set of Sierra 1s with a center channel to go with the receiver. I tried connect everything with 14 gauge speaker wire and I get no sound. I'm very new to HT speaker set-ups and these are the first set of speakers that I've tried connecting to the Yamaha receiver. I believe I'm connecting everything correctly and I reset to the receiver to factory default settings. I tried connecting my computer to the AVR via audio RGA and I also tried connecting my cable box to the AVR via HDMI. In both cases there is no audio coming from the speakers. I do get however get picture going to the TV when I connect the HDMI out from the AVR to the TV.
Am I missing something in the set-up or do I just have a broken receiver? Any thoughts or suggestions of how I can test the AVR would be really helpful.

Have you read the manual? setup inputs?
Re: New Sierra 1s and a dead Yamaha AVR???
Yeah, I read through the set-up manual for both the speakers and the AVR. I'm not really sure what I'm missing...
Re: New Sierra 1s and a dead Yamaha AVR???
Have you tried running the auto setup..... YPAO?
That should send a test tone to the speakers. If that does not work it's probably broken.
Re: New Sierra 1s and a dead Yamaha AVR???
If you're using ARC output you must assign your other components with ARC... otherwise...you'll not get audio or try using coax or fibre optic cable. I found out with my anthem...HDMI wasn't ARC compliant and I bought a different receiver to solely use HDMI.
*Have you tried a different AVR with speakers to rule out one or the other*. I doubt this will be the problem...it's likely due to finding the correct assigned output.
Re: New Sierra 1s and a dead Yamaha AVR???
* I assume, then, that you configured the inputs correctly? If you did a factory reset, your configurations will likely need to be redone.
* Do you get sound when trying the FM (or AM?) radio?
* Did you try different sources aside from computer and cable box? Perhaps connect a bluray player via HDMI (try all different inputs) and then by analog (if it has outputs).
* AVR set for 8 ohm speakers?
* Speakers connected to correct terminals on the AVR?
* Do you have a sub? Does it make sound?
* Do the test tones make sound?
* Do you have a separate amplifier? Try connecting AVR Audio Out to AMP, and AMP to speakers.
* HDMI configuration ok? (around pg 86 in manual I see online). HDMI control off; ARC off.
???
Re: New Sierra 1s and a dead Yamaha AVR???
What leads me to believe it's ARC related...was his comments on having display and no sound. In my case...I couldn't use fiber optic for sound because of space limitations...on back of OLED panel..plus this method defeats the single HDMI hookup...the tv worked but he's not assigned the correct audio output and unless his display is arc compatible...he'll need either coax or fibre optic....for sound
Re: New Sierra 1s and a dead Yamaha AVR???
billy p - perhaps, but he did say he hooked up the computer and cable box to the AVR and AVR HDMI out to TV. CEC/ARC can be buggy (I never use it - I'm running an optical cable from my LG into my MRX720).
I'm thinking either a configuration/setup issue (eg inputs not configured correctly) or worse case, AVR is bad. I thought maybe an HDMI board but has same issue with analog/RGA.
Re: New Sierra 1s and a dead Yamaha AVR???
The key questions in my mind:
"Do you get sound when trying the FM (or AM?) radio?"
"Do the test tones make sound?"
Re: New Sierra 1s and a dead Yamaha AVR???
Thanks for the advice.
I tried FM/AM Radio: No sound
I tried Auto set-up YPAO: Couldn't start, no sound
I confirmed that the AVR is set to 8 Ohms
I confirmed that HDMI Control and ARC are both off
I think the AVR is bad...
