besides amplifiers and speakers? i've tried 2 receivers and 2 speakers yet i'm still getting some distortion in the dialogue. the only thing that i haven't tried changing is the source of the signal, which has always been the dvd player since i first noticed it. it's an older sony non-progressive dvd player. with the first receiver i used multi-channel rca audio connections and with the new receiver i used optical and the distortion didn't change. switching the 340 center with a 170 was the same...speaker wire? this is driving me crazy...i keep trying to ignore it but i can't.

Hmmmmm.....

I don't think distortion would just be isolated to dialogue. Is this specifically with movies? Definitely don't ignore it.

Can you swap out the Sony? Which model is it?

I will second Curtis' thought - is the material known to be good? Is it happening with different DVDs?

Other possibilities include something vibrating near the center channel speaker (or the speaker itself vibrating on the shelf).

Speaker wire will generally only cause audible distortion if there is a bad connection or damage to the wire.

You've swapped speakers, so that's out. I'd try different sources and different connections with those sources, if possible. If your DVD player has optical and coax outputs, play a DVD with optical then switch to coax. Next, play a CD with optical then switch to coax. If your system is used in conjunction with a cable box, run the audio from it into your receiver and see if it goes away. If so, it's the DVD player for sure. Basically, just start using different sources and input methods until something changes so you can narrow down the problem.

i tried the cable box using a composite connection and that had it too. some channels had a lot while others only had a little.

so it is the cable box and DVD player?

so it is the cable box and DVD player?

well, that's what i've connected so far to my new receiver. so i don't think i can single out the dvd player as the culprit.

I would start double checking and switching cables. Maybe even move everything to another location in the house to see how it sounds.

You have to figure out what has been the one constant in all your attempts.

the only things that have been constant are the electrical outlet, the location, and the speaker wire. i'm taking it to a friend's house soon and see what happens.
