Hello All,
I would like to know how much sand I have to get to fill up these stands.

Thanks ahead of time.

Just get (1) 50LB. bag of play sand from Home Depot. You will have plenty!

I think it's under $4.00. :)

Thanks for the quick reply, Mag. Picked it up today. Now, shouldn't there be a plug of some type for the hole in the top of the stand?

If they are like my stands, you will need to fill them with the top plate removed.

There is no top plate on the TP-24 stands (for the 340Mains). Just a hole cut in the top of the stand.

Hi Lee,

Sorry.. no plug for the opening on the top of the stands... No real need for one :)

Another option I have seen is to use steel shot instead of the sand. It is a lot less messy, and there is no chance if anything living in the sand.

Just make sure you use steel shot, not lead shot.

Why steel and not lead shot? Also, where can you get steel shot? I will be filling my stands but I'm not sure if I want sand or not.

Many are worried about lead poisioning. Lead shot is banned most places for waterfowl hunting. Shot can be found at gun shops advertising reloading supplies. If there is a skeet range in your area some of them sell used shot.

The typical playground sand you buy at Home Depot is cleaned, sterilized, and non-toxic.

And MUCH less expensive than shot, steel or lead.

I have also read about people using cat litter to fill stands.

Good to know.

Stick with the sand! :D

I filled my stands outside in my garage, so any spillage could be swept away into the grass next to my driveway.

The sand works perfectly to add mass and get rid of the ringing of the hollow steel uprights on my stands.

Well, I filled my stands yesterday. I took the sand from the bag and poured it into 1-gallon milk jugs first, then using a funnel, I filled the stands where they sit on the floor. I found that a 50lb bag per stand still doesn't fill it up completely. But, when you rap on the stand, it no longer has any hollowness to it. I used a piece of clear packing tape to cover over the hole. After putting the 340's back on, I proceeded to level the speakers with the spikes.

Lee,
Did you go with steel shot or sand? Just curious what works best. If shot, about how much, cuz sand's dirt cheap?

I used the play sand from Home Depot. At $4.00 a bag, it was definitely cheaper the shot.

i used two 50lb bags from Lowes and they had a slit on the end of the bag that allowed you to easily pour it. i can't remember the brand, but i want to say the text on the bag was yellow and black?

Thanks. Sorry, I must've missed pg 2 where you already mentioned what you used. Would you say by adding sand makes the 340 alot more or just a little more kid-proof?

Although I do not use the Ascend stands, I do have a 7 and 5 year old kids. Putting 50lbs of sand in each of my stands definitely made them more sturdy and planted to the ground. They have never been a problem with the kids.

Hmmm. Well, just how bad would it be to use lead shot? With no kids in the house for the forseable future, and the shot sealed up tight, are there any worries?

I ask because I just did it last week; I added about 35lbs of #7.5 lead shot or so to my woodtech/metaltech stands. Should I undo it (ctrl-z?)?

I'm guessing it'll be fine, but that's me not wanting to do more work. :)

don't bother changing it. The lead is not exposed and no food will come in contact with it (Right? :D ). Sand is probably cheaper, and you don't need to go to a gun shop, or sporting goods store to purchase it, so most people use it.

Heh, I'll try not to eat off of the stands :D

I picked shot because I was worried about the sand leaking through the bottom of the stands if things loosened up at all.

Phew, now I can relax and take down the toxic waste site yellow caution tape and remove my superfund site funding request. :)

Jonny, don't stress about the lead shot at all. BTW I believe there is an area in north Omaha that actually IS included in a lead superfund clean-up...really. Adding your home-theater to that project shouldn't be a problem! :D

Haha, I know! Before I moved up here I found that out, and decided that the North-East side of town was an area I wasn't going to house hunt in

At least I know where I can dump my extra shot. Heh. (Not that I would ever do that, I grew up in a state park in NY, so I am part tree-hugger :))

How far are you from Omaha?

Cool - we could have a NE/IA get-together, heh :)

(I've asked you how far away you are before haven't I? Sorry :()
