I'm setting up a HT for my father and had a few questions about the 170's. He is planning to place the L/R 170's on bookshelves, but because of measurement reasons, it would be easier to place them on their sides. How will this effect their performance/imaging?

i think it may affect tweeter dispersion, but not certain.

I would think that if you were sitting withing 15 degrees of on-axis that it wouldn't make much of a difference, like with a MTM center, but I could be wrong. This is a question that should be e-mailed or called in to Ascend. Maybe David Fabrikant could shed some more light on it.

Call DaveF. He may suggest that they rotate the tweeter diffuser for you like they do on the 340 center.

The 170's do not use a tweeter diffuser.

So long as the speakers are placed as mirror-image, there should be no problem.

Dave could handle this question, but I'll chime in first. My understanding is that laying the 170 on its side in no way, shape or form affects the acoustical performance of the speaker. However, if I'm wrong, Dave will be the first to let me and y'all know. ;)

Just thought I would provide some input here...

One of the unique features of the CBM-170 is very wide and symmetrical vertical dispersion. Placing the CBM-170 on its side will, in most cases, provide the same performance if it were placed vertically.

The key here is where you will be doing your listening. When placed on its side, the CBM-170 will deliver the same response as a CBM-170 placed vertical, up to about 15-20 degrees horizontally off-axis.

If you are within this listening window (under most circumstances you will be), it would be very difficult to hear a difference between horizontal or vertical placement...

If you wish, send me an email answering the following questions and I would be happy to analyze your situation..

1. How far back is your listening positioning from the midpoint between the two speakers?

2. What will be the distance between the two speakers?

3. About how high off the ground will the speakers be placed?
