Is there any truth to the old wives tale that "watching TV w/the lights off is bad for your eyes?"

In any case, in addition to a ceiling fan w/a light fixture, we have some recessed lighting in the four corners of our room so that's what I usually keep on while watching TV/movies. It almost provides for an indirect lighting kind of feeling in the room.

When we're just sitting around watching TV the lights stay on, but when it's movie time they get turned off.

Ditto what Eddie said.

We need a dimmer option here. I installed a dimmer switch when I wired the lights in and the lights are not 'off', but you certainly couldn't read by them either (including finding things on a remote control).

So, I voted lights on, but it's a lot closer to dark than light :)

i think there is some truth to that wive's tale. something about retina and too much contrast?

I have read that it is good to have some light on while watching televison. The light should be low level and to the rear of the set. The reason given was that this will help your eyes not to become fatigued during sudden changes in contrast and brightness levels that happen on the screen.

On the other hand if you are using a front projection unit, the darker the better.

I like a little light behind my set. This helps me not to trip over the dog during potty breaks.

I prefer to turn the lights off, except for the backlight on the wall behind my TV. But, the wife likes the lights on when watching movies and TV shows.

do you do it with the lights on? I didn't realize you were talking about watching TV or movies at first :D

Since my lights are on a timer, unless I stay up really late watching a movie or a tv show the lights are usually on.
