I was looking at these: http://www.wood-tech.com/product.php?cat=ss&series=tmt

Does anybody else have any recommendations. I want stands that are sand fillable and are 28-30 inches tall.

Yeah, the prices are okay there:

I was thinking about ordering from here:

I looked at those Wood-tech stands at first, but ended up with their other ones which have three round columns and a rounded, black-veneered MDF base. They match the 170 cosmetics nearly perfectly and are sand/shot fillable!

Not sure you need everything here, but it's on their website under metal upright stands.

I just purchased a pair of Sanus Steel Foundations SF-30s' for my 170s from x10.com for $111. They look awesome. Amazon carries the black ones for $114.

Sanus link:

Here is the link at Amazon:

They are sand-fillable, come with adjustable spikes or rubber feet. Here are some photos:

I did some calculating last night and it looks like I'm going to need some stands that are around 36".

I'm going to be using Ascends for nearfield listening at my computer desk in my office.

Does anybody know where I can get some reasonably priced sand fillable 36" stands?

How about these Plateaus from Racks & Stands? They are sand-fillable and seem reasonably priced at $70.

And if you would like metal ones:

I agree. I like those. Appears to have a nice large floor base for stability.

i saw over at avs a guy's HT setup which included stainless steel bases/glass top speaker stands, and also a smaller version of these for his remotes. looked very sexy - anyone have a clue who would supply these kind of bad boys?

I think those a both ugly. I prefer round pillars. I really like the styling of the ones in my first post. Too bad they don't make a 36" model.

Looks like it's Wharfedale & it comes in 24" & 28" flavors.

I really like these:
http://www.studiotech.com/jsp/productDetail.jsp?prodID=13

but I'm also considering the adjustable model of these:
http://www.omnimount.com/product.asp?p=28

The can get the adjustable ones about $25 cheaper than the studiotechs but something tells me that I won't care for them that much.

For some reason I'm having a hard time shelling out over $100 for speaker stands but I really want fillable ones since I'm going with such tall stands. Does anyone else use their 170s for nearfield and can recommend a stand?

What height speakers do you guys typically use for your 170's??

I use 30" stands which puts the top of the 170's at approx. 42" above the floor.

When I first set them up they seemed too high. After a while I realized this was perfect, at least in my setup. I think this is the recommended height by Ascend as well.

I use the Wood Technology MU-30 stands that Mag Neato mentioned. I believe 30" is about what Ascend recommends for the 170. They've worked fine for me -- they look nice with the 170s, they're stable, they're fillable, and you can route the speaker cable down through one of the support columns and out through the base. I got them from Hififorless for about $90 delivered. Try this link: http://www.hififorless.com/categories.php?categoryid=696

Good luck.

As I posted earlier, I also use 30" stands for my 170s. I believe the rule of the thumb for speaker height is to have the tweeter at ear level when sitting in your listening position. And in my case, the 30" stands do just that!

the double boxes that the 170's come in are about 24" high, that's what i'm using right now lol.
