Hello,

I would like to know using Dirac graphs. Could I pre-eq my subs and run Dirac again to improve the responses that I am getting.

I've attached 4 images for 2 subs. Sub one with and with out target curve. Sub two with and with target curve.

Recommendations and pointing me in the right direction will be greatly appreciated.

When you say pre-eq do you mean using eq that's built into the subwoofer or something else? Dirac will only eq your sub once and as you can see from the graphs it has a maximum of 10db boost. You don't want to boost any more than that or you can push your subwoofer beyond it's capability.

What I mean is to use the PEQ or other controls on the sub to boost or remove frequencies before running Dirac. For example, I am assuming for sub 2 I could either boost around 100hz or subtract from around 30hz on the subs PEQ to "smooth" things out before running Dirac.

Can you? Yes. Should you? Probably.

My understanding, limited as it may be, is that one will typically get a better result if one first uses programs like REW to find optimum placement for subs and get the best (flattest) frequency response one can before running a program like Audyssey or Dirac. This includes treating the room (bass traps), etc.

Said another way, it's best to limit the amount of EQ that a program like Dirac or Audyssey has to perform.

As a not very closely related example, I recently raised my surround speakers about 25cm. The reason was the high backed couch that is the main listening position, and to get my Sierra-1's woofers up so that they were line-of-site with my ears. Sounds goofy, I know. Most people will say to only worry about the tweeters, which were fine already.

But what I was hearing was fairly strained. Tight, thin, whatever. Just didn't sound right. And when I raised the surround speakers up that 25cm or so, and then reran Audyssey, things got a lot better. Everything smoothed out, filled out, and that feeling of strain went away.

My hypothesis for why is simply that Audyssey wasn't having to work so hard on those surrounds. After raising them up, they were giving my ears flatter frequency response to start with, so Audyssey was just doing touch up instead of major overhaul.

The output of your subs seem to be sub optimal.....meaning they roll off steeply early. Either

1) they are not positioned properly
2) their exist measurement errors- please ensure that the mic has an unobstructed view of the speakers and also there are no devices close behind or near to the measurement mic.
3) the subs are damaged (not very likely)

The sub could be moved around to optimize the uncorrected response. Failing that you could lower the overall level of the sub and other speakers to remove the dips where Dirac is unable to meet the target curve.
