Generally two speakers for a center aren't a good idea. Here is a thread on another board regarding two speakers for a center http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=158226 and a FAQ on it http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/qa/qa2002/qa324.html
One 340 is a better choice in my opinion but a single 170 makes a fine CC.

(Why) doesn't the 340 have the same problem (comb filtering) because it has two horizontal woofers?

Thanks,

Andy

I believe that is eliminated since it was designed with the two drivers to begin with. That is not the same as having two speakers a few feet apart handling the same information. This would be an interesting question to get input from David or Jason about.
