Looks like the Ascend set-up you describe would work great. Matter of fact, that's my exact set-up.

Sony WE610 60" LCD RPTV
Pioneer Elite 59TXi AVR
Pioneer Elite 59AVi Universal DVD player
CBM 170 Front L/R
CBM 340c Center
HTM 200s Rear L/R and rear surround (6.1)
HSU VTF-3
Monster THX certified interconnects
DIY speaker cable (that's better than anyhing I can purchase elsewhere)

Thanks for the quick reply, I thought it would be. I was wondering though if the the STF-2 sub would be enough for the room since I also want to it inside the entertainment unit behind a door with speaker grille ?

Red flag.....

I do not think a sub inside a cabinet behind a door is a good thing....even with speaker grills. You should call Ascend or Hsu about that one.

Your going vibrate the hell out of your entertainment center putting the sub in it and the resulting sound from inclosing it will suck too.

I thought it would so I will just have to find another place for the sub.

so this setup works well? i've been going through all the different combinations and came up with this exact one. my room is semi small (12'x15' with cathedral ceilings). i wanted to make sure the 170's match well with a 340c in the center, and that the 200s can keep up as surrounds w/o a noticable loss in the lower freqs. i'll be powering them with an onkyo tx-sr601.

thanks

B-dub.....welcome to the forum.

All three speakers match very well.

Will you be using a sub? The lower frequencies will be handled by the sub, so there should not be any issues there.

curtis,
wow! that was a quick reply, thanks. i was considering the HSU stf-2 sub since my room isn't all that large, and i want to me semi-conscientious of the people that live below me in the apartments

Any good, properly calibrated sub will be able to bother your neighbors. Its just that the bigger and louder ones will be able to do it more. Basicly, if the smaller sub is capable of the same loudness at proper volumes, it will make no difference to your neighbors.

How high are the ceilings in the room?

they start at 10' at the back wall, and go up to... alot... probably 20' above where the tv/stereo are located (these are approximate as i havent had time to measure b/c i have been out of town for 2 weeks and dont get back till tomorrow). i know this isnt the most accoustically sound room, but its all i have to deal w/. the side wall is 12'

That is a lot of cubic feet for the STF-2 to deal with. You might want to talk to Ascend or Hsu for the best model and/or placement.

My room is 13'x 18' w/8' ceiling. I use a PSB subsonicIII(12'woofer,180watts) and is usually sufficient for good bass. If you are in doubt about the STF-2 and think you may utilize a higher output sub in the future, get the STF-3 and simply run it with it's gain turned down for now. Once you move to a house where sound levels won't be an issue, just turn the sub's gain up for increased output.

aww man i was trying to stay away from spending alot on a sub[B)]. i'll have to wait till i get home and make some measurements, then i'll probably call the Ascend folks and see what they have to say. of course the idea of spending a little more now on the sub so i dont have to upgrade later is a good one... just have to save up some more $$

Why is the price jump from the -2 to the -3 $200, when the jump from the -1 to the -2 is only $100? The -3 must be a much bigger upgrade from the -2 than the -2 is over the -1! Roger? Over! Unger? Out!!!("And don't call me Shirley!")

they sneak that other $100 in the vtf2 mk 2, which is only has 50 watts more power than the stf2, basically $2 for every watt of power... hurts my wallet

Don't forget the variable tuning in the VTF series as well.

so.. what would work best per $ for all that freakin cubic footage, the big stf-3 at $599 or the vtf-2 mk2 with the variable tuning for $499. the advanced features of the VTF sound nice, and rough calculations put my room at ~2200 cubic feet, under the 3000 recomended for the stf2.

question about the VTF vs. STF: since the STF doesnt have the variable tuning, does it act like a VTF in max loudness or max extension mode?

curtis

The STF-2 is like a VTF-2 in max extension mode.

The STF-3 is like a VTF-3 in max output mode.
