View Full Version : Need USB power for Directv; near speaker

I was advised (on DBSDish boards) that getting a USB power strip (Uninteruptable power source) for my Directv box would help with all the tiny outages we have in western NC. Sometimes we get 3-4 in a week.

But they said there might be problems near a speaker. My 340SE left unit would be 2-2.5 feet above the power strip. Putting a larger one on the floor would be "non-negotiable" to my wife.
Does anyone know if the UPS would interfere with the speaker?
Thanks,

Pegleg

Did "they" say what kind of problems and why?

Yes, "they" mentioned magnetic interference, I think.

Never heard of that type of problem before....but I think speakers that are magnetically shielded would be OK then.

I think the OP is a bit confused, or just fat-fingerering in his post.

1) he has power outages often
2) he was advised to buy a UPS (not a USB)
3) Advised not to place a big UPS near a TV/Speaker

Seems like a reasonable advice given the situation. A UPS shouldn't really interfere with anything unless you put it VERY close to something. On the other hand, A big speaker magnet may actually screw with the battery in the UPS over time, but I can't really speak to that.

I would add, if you outages last more than, oh I'd say a minute or two, then you will need a pretty expensive UPS to to keep everything on.

If it's usually just seconds, then any mid size UPS from APC should be good enough assuming you have 3-4 things powered off of it.

I think he just wants to keep his DVR up and running.

Correct, Curtis! Just the Directv box and maybe the dvd player as well.
Thanks. Sounds like it's do-able.
