Hey all. I'm planning on upgrading my faithful 1995 Sony 27" CRT to a spiffy new 42" or larger LCD in the coming months. I'm in an apartment and can't mount my center speaker (CMT-340) on a wall when the new slim TV arrives. Can I place the TV on top of the speaker? Seems like that'll be too low and reflect off the surface of the TV stand. Ideas? Where does one put a center speaker now?

You know, I searched all through the forum and yet I didn't see the sticky thread above this one. Call me Mr. Oblivious :-)

There is a thread, in this forum but it talks mostly mounting the center on the wall. I have a DLP that sits in an entertainment center. I raised the center shelf and used right angle aluminum to build a shelf to support my 340, this has worked out quite well. The 340 sits on a shelf on top of the TV and below the entertainment center center shelf.

As far as your question, You can put the TV on top of the speaker, but I would mount the TV on top of an enclosure that the speaker sits in and tilts up. Get a laser pointer and set it on top of the speak and tilt it up to point head height where you will be sitting. I've done this in the reverse and pointed my speaker down.

Do you mean placing the tv directly on top of the speaker? IIRC from other threads in the forum, it wasn't recommended, mainly because of stability/weight issues. Maybe Ascend can verify the weight-bearing capabilities of the 340c.

Nowadays, seems there's many more options in consoles that can accomodate larger center channel speakers.

I used this to mount my Sierra center on top of my 34-inch CRT:

It holds up to 30 pounds.

It also works with rear projections. It may or may not work with your CRT. I'm guessing not, but possibly.
