I'm wondering if I can get by on the STF-1($300) or if I should just get the STF-2 for $400. I'm these are a steal but I keep thinking that for $300 there's virtually no risk. BTW it would be for an Onkyo 502 system with Ascend 170SE fronts and I want it to last for years. For now my space is limited but I'll probably be in small apts for the next 5 years. As a 3rd option, should I just exchange the 170SEs for 340SEs? I would need a significant bass improvement for the 340s to work. Music to movie ratio is 50/50. Please help.

What is that offer?? $100 off on a sub....what deal is that?
In a small apartment for two channel music....I would go for 170SE's and an STF-1.

Sorry, I can't find the $100 OFF all Hsu subs deal anymore. I will post tomorrow. I flew in late last night and I'm researching at work, I should exercise more diligence before making such claims. I'll let you know if its true tomorrow afternoon.

I know they have a $100 off a sub deal if you purchase their VT-12 Ventriloquist speaker system.

Darn! Your right, no $100 off all subs...could've sworn I saw it. I'm leaning towards the STF-1 now for sure.

I just installed an STF-1 in a friend's HT. I'm impressed. It's not going to get the real deep stuff but it surprised me how good it is for music. I even offered to barter for it but he refused to part with it. In a small apartment, I doubt you'll be disappointed.

I love the STF-1. If I ever do a little system for any reason, it would be at the top of my list for subs.

What about the Outlaw LFM-2? This is very similar to the STF-1 and Hsu had a hand in it's design from what I hear. Has anyone had any experience with this sub? It has a more polished look and goes a little lower on the specs sheet compared to the STF-1 for the same price.

True, but you can't package it with Ascends.
I do like that plexiglass top on the LFM's.

I was also going to suggest the Outlaw LFM-2 as an alternative but wineguy beat me to it. And while the Outlaw is definitely sexier-looking, the HSU matches the Ascend speakers perfectly - the vinyl-wrap finish is the same and both have visible "end caps".
you can always also try for b-stock from Hsu. 20% off is pretty decent. and you should ask Dr. Hsu before ordering about your room size. I live in a small apartment too but because of the open floorplan it's a pretty large space overall and he recommended me going bigger than the STF-2 even.

So no one votes for 340s across the front?
