I about to try the 170s but I might find that I need a subwoofer. I found a Yamaha on sale for about $100.00, Would I need a more expensive sw to complement the Ascends? BTW is it better to have 3-way speakers or two- ways with a sub.

For music or movies? For movies, the Yamaha might work. For music, no way. Unless Yamaha has come out with a sub I'm not familiar with (very possible), the 170's will need a better sub.

For a sub for movies, in this price range:

It's a lot more expensive to design and build a three way than a two way. If you're not going to use a sub, a three way can have some benefits (at a cost). With a sub, the equation really leans towards the two way. This is a generality. There may an exception out there that I'm not familiar with.

David,

Do you mean that when you use a two-way system your main concern should be the quality of the two-way speakers? Anyway, I need the speakers mostly for music.

My concern is value. A two way is less expensive to design and produce than a three way. A lot less. What do you get when you go to a three way?
Yes, the main concern should be the quality of the two way speakers but that's true of a three way as well.
