View Full Version : What driver is reproducing vocals?

When I'm listening to some music on my Ascend HTM-200s, which driver is reproducing the vocals? The tweeter, the woofers, or both? And if both, what percentage is on each one? I'm talking about something like Norah Jones.

Does anyone know what range vocals are at, and what the x-over frequencies are in my speakers?

Just wondering, because the vocals sound really good on these speakers.

While I don't recall the crossover point, it is likely at least 2kHz which means that all but the most high-pitched of vocals would coming from the woofers. I'll see if I can dig up the diagram I found showing frequency ranges of various instruments and vocals.

I found the diagram (http://home.tir.com/~ms/concepts/concepts.html), but there seems to be some disagreement in the range of vocals between different diagrams, particularly on the upper end of the spectrum.

Now that I read through stuff, I'm remembering that there is a good deal of song/speech in the 1kHz-3kHz range, so the crossover handling is critical.

Interesting stuff. So it looks like the vocals may be split between the two...

Interesting stuff. So it looks like the vocals may be split between the two...Or even three...

I'm pretty sure that low male voices (think James Earl Jones here) can dip below 100 Hz. Ever noticed Darth Vadar's voice coming out of your subwoofer? Should be localizable in the 80-100 range.

The 170's crossover is 2.2khz. I would guess the 200's is similar as they use the same tweeter.

I have been playing with the spectrum feature of Adobe Audition, so if anyone is curious about the frequency ranges of a particular piece of music, let me know and if I have it, I'll load it up and post a screenshot. So far, it seems like the vast majority of vocals I have thrown at it are easily below the popular 2kHz crossover range.

i'd like to see that Brad.

i started reading about mariah carey's range a little more because i found it difficult to believe and there appears to be a lot of controversy. so, i don't know how valid a lot of the info for her 'claim to range' is out there. wikipedia is pretty neat because it's like a peer review. i'd say she can go really high, but i'm not so sure she has the bottom to top range that her publicity crew claims.

Here's one set of images and description I put together:

Hey Brad, I just posted last night about AKUS LIVE and how I was wincing with my current speakers (hurry up 340's!) when she would really belt it out on a couple of songs... do you have it, and if so, how about Alison on either BROADWAY or GHOST...HOUSE tracks? Just curious!
